Davidson Routs Loyola Chicago Behind Blums, Scovens in A-10 Matchup

DAVIDSON, N.C. (Interstat) — The Davidson Wildcats used a dominant first-half offensive display and relentless defensive pressure to overwhelm the Loyola Chicago Ramblers 84-64 in an Atlantic 10 Conference men’s basketball game Friday night at a sold-out Belk Arena.

A crowd of 3,520 watched Davidson improve to 14-9 overall and strengthen its position in the conference standings, while Loyola Chicago fell to 6-19, continuing a difficult season.

The game was effectively decided in the opening 20 minutes. Davidson shot with precision and capitalized on nearly every Loyola Chicago mistake, building a 47-29 halftime lead. The Wildcats’ offense was a model of efficiency, with crisp ball movement leading to high-percentage shots. Defensively, they suffocated the Ramblers, forcing 10 first-half turnovers and converting them into 15 points, setting the tone for the evening.

The most important stretch of the game came midway through the first half, when Davidson unleashed a decisive 17-2 run to break open a close contest. With Loyola Chicago trailing just 14-11, the Wildcats’ offense ignited. Josh Scovens, who was instrumental throughout the half, scored on a layup. After a Ramblers turnover, Roberts Blums drilled a 3-pointer. Following a Loyola Chicago timeout, Davidson forced another turnover, leading to another Scovens basket. Blums then capped the surge with a driving layup, pushing the lead to 29-13 and forcing the Ramblers into a deep hole from which they never recovered.

Davidson’s balanced attack was led by Roberts Blums, who came off the bench to score 16 points, all in the first half, including four 3-pointers. Josh Scovens added 14 points, while Parker Friedrichsen contributed 15, hitting three shots from beyond the arc. The Wildcats shared the ball effectively, tallying 17 assists, and their defense was the story, generating 23 points off 15 Loyola Chicago turnovers and outscoring the Ramblers 17-3 in fastbreak opportunities.

Loyola Chicago was led by the interior presence of Miles Rubin, who finished with 17 points, three blocked shots and several strong defensive rebounds. Daniil Glazkov added nine points. The Ramblers managed to match Davidson with 34 points in the paint, but their offensive efforts were consistently undermined by ball-handling errors and an inability to slow the Wildcats’ perimeter shooting or transition game.

Davidson maintained its comfortable lead throughout the second half, with the margin never dipping below 15 points. The Wildcats’ offense cooled slightly after the break, but their defensive intensity never wavered, ensuring there would be no dramatic comeback.

The victory marked Davidson’s second win over Loyola Chicago this season, having also defeated the Ramblers 79-64 in Chicago on Jan. 7. According to pregame analytics from Interstat, Davidson entered with an 80.8% probability to win and covered the spread as a 10.5-point favorite. The combined score of 148 points went over the projected total of 138.

Davidson looks ahead to a key road test at Dayton on Sunday, Feb. 15. Loyola Chicago returns home to host Saint Louis on Friday, Feb. 13, as both teams continue their conference schedules.
