Lorick, Nkrumah Lead Tennessee State Past Eastern Illinois in OVC Matchup
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Interstat) — Antoine Lorick scored 24 points and Aaron Nkrumah added 23 as Tennessee State used a dominant second half and capitalized on a slew of Eastern Illinois turnovers to secure a 77-68 victory in an Ohio Valley Conference men’s basketball game Thursday night at the Howard Gentry Complex.
The Tigers, who avenged a home loss to the Panthers just over three weeks prior, improved to 15-8 overall. Eastern Illinois dropped its third consecutive game, falling to 9-15.
The most important part of the game was a decisive stretch early in the second half where Tennessee State transformed a narrow halftime lead into a commanding advantage. Leading 33-30 at the break, the Tigers opened the second period with a 9-2 run, capped by a 3-pointer from Lorick, to push their lead to double digits for the first time at 42-32. The Panthers never recovered, as the Tigers consistently answered every attempt at a rally with timely baskets and forced turnovers.
Tennessee State’s defense was the catalyst, generating 19 points off 16 Eastern Illinois turnovers, compared to just nine points off their own six giveaways. The Tigers also recorded 10 steals, led by Lorick’s four and three from Dante Harris, who orchestrated the offense with 10 assists.
While both teams shot nearly identically from the field, Tennessee State’s decisive edge came at the free-throw line, where they made 21 of 27 attempts. Eastern Illinois attempted only 15 free throws, making 10. The Tigers also held advantages in fast-break points, 18-10, and assists, 10-4.
Lorick, a 6-foot-9 forward from Augusta, Georgia, was efficient in his 34 minutes, shooting 8 of 14 from the field and adding two assists and a block to his game-high point total. His performance marked a significant bounce-back after being held to five points in Tennessee State’s previous game.
Nkrumah, a 6-foot-6 guard from Worcester, Massachusetts, complemented Lorick by going 7 of 15 from the floor and a perfect 9 for 9 from the foul line. Harris, from Washington, D.C., facilitated the offense while adding seven points and five rebounds to his double-digit assist tally.
Eastern Illinois was led by Meechie White and Kooper Jacobi, who each scored 15 points. White, a guard from Louisville, Kentucky, also had three steals. Markus Blackwell added 12 points for the Panthers, who shot a solid 51% from the field but were undone by their ball-handling issues.
The game was a statistical anomaly in one regard: both teams finished with exactly five offensive rebounds, leading to an even 36-36 battle on the glass. The difference was Tennessee State’s ability to convert Eastern Illinois’s mistakes into easy scoring opportunities at the rim, where they held a 40-36 edge in paint points, and at the charity stripe.
A crowd of 523 watched as the Tigers methodically pulled away after halftime, maintaining at least a two-possession lead for the final 16 minutes. Eastern Illinois cut the deficit to seven points on several occasions down the stretch, but each time Tennessee State responded, often with a basket from Lorick or Nkrumah or a pair of free throws to keep the Panthers at bay.
The victory keeps Tennessee State in the upper tier of the OVC standings as the conference schedule enters its final month. Eastern Illinois, mired in a slump, will look to regroup quickly with another road test looming.
The game’s final score fell under the projected total, and Tennessee State covered the pregame spread as a 10.5-point favorite, aligning with the high probability given to them by predictive metrics entering the contest.
