Western Carolina at UNC Greensboro

GREENSBORO, N.C. (Interstat) — Two teams seeking momentum in the Southern Conference will meet Wednesday when Western Carolina visits UNC Greensboro at Greensboro Coliseum.

Both the Catamounts (8-13) and Spartans (8-15) enter the midweek clash looking to halt recent slides. Western Carolina has lost two straight, including an 88-74 home defeat to Samford on Sunday. UNC Greensboro has dropped three consecutive games, most recently a 71-66 overtime loss at The Citadel on Saturday.

The matchup features a pair of standout guards in strong recent form. Western Carolina will rely on Julien Soumaoro, who is averaging 13.1 points over his last eight games. He scored 19 points in a road win at East Tennessee State on Jan. 29 and logged 33 minutes in Sunday’s loss.

UNC Greensboro counters with Justin Neely, who has been a consistent force. Neely is coming off a 19-point, 13-rebound double-double in the overtime loss at The Citadel and has scored in double figures in seven straight contests, including a 26-point outing at Wofford on Jan. 7.

The Catamounts have shown flashes, with a 90-88 win at East Tennessee State highlighting their capability. The Spartans have struggled defensively, allowing an average of 88.6 points during their three-game skid.

This game is the first of a home-and-home series between the teams this month, with the rematch scheduled for Feb. 18 in Cullowhee. Wednesday’s winner will gain a critical edge in the conference standings and a needed boost ahead of the final stretch of the regular season.

Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. EST.
