Cowboys Edge Cardinals in Tight Southland Conference Showdown

BEAUMONT, Texas (Interstat) — In a game defined by a dominant start, a furious comeback and a final possession that hung in the balance, the McNeese State Cowboys escaped the Montagne Center with a narrow 64-63 victory over the Lamar Cardinals in a Southland Conference men’s basketball thriller on Saturday.

The outcome hinged on the game’s frantic final seven seconds. With McNeese State clinging to a one-point lead, Lamar’s Rob Lee, who spearheaded the Cardinals’ second-half charge, drove the lane and connected on a difficult layup to put Lamar ahead 63-62 with just three seconds remaining.

The Cowboys, out of timeouts, advanced the ball with a long inbound pass. Garwey Dual, fouled on the floor by Lamar’s King-Njhsanni Wilhite, stepped to the line for two free throws with 1.7 seconds on the clock. The 6-foot-5 guard calmly sank both shots, restoring McNeese State’s lead at 64-63.

Lamar’s last-ditch attempt, a full-court heave, was unsuccessful, allowing the Cowboys to survive a contest they controlled for the first 25 minutes.

McNeese State (18-4, 8-1 Southland) built its advantage with a stifling defensive first half, holding Lamar to just 23 points on 30% shooting. The Cowboys’ length and activity, particularly from 6-foot-10 center Jerrell Colbert, disrupted the Cardinals’ offense. Colbert finished with five of McNeese State’s eight blocks to go with 10 points.

Offensively, the Cowboys were paced by Larry Johnson, who scored 22 points, including several momentum-sustaining baskets. His backcourt mate, Tyshawn Archie, added seven points and three assists. McNeese State led by as many as 16 in the first half and took a 31-23 advantage into the break.

The second half was a stark reversal. Lamar (11-11, 5-4), energized by a home crowd of 5,714, found its rhythm behind Lee. The guard from Flint, Michigan, scored 19 of his game-high 25 points after halftime, attacking the rim and hitting from outside. Braden East provided a strong interior presence for the Cardinals, contributing 13 points and two blocks.

A 17-4 Lamar run midway through the second half erased the Cowboys’ cushion and set the stage for a back-and-forth final ten minutes. The Cardinals took their first lead since the opening minutes at 47-46 on a Lee 3-pointer with 8:48 to play.

From there, neither team led by more than three points. McNeese State relied on key plays in the closing moments: a critical steal by DJ Richards with under a minute left, and Johnson’s drive-and-dish to Dual for a corner 3-pointer that put the Cowboys up 58-55 with 54 seconds remaining.

The game was ultimately decided at the foul line, where McNeese State held a significant advantage, making 17 of 19 attempts. Lamar went 9 for 12 from the stripe. The Cowboys also capitalized on Lamar’s mistakes, scoring 20 fast-break points and 14 points off turnovers.

Statistically, it was a game of contrasting efficiencies. McNeese State scored its 64 points on just 59 possessions, while Lamar needed 62 possessions to reach 63 points. The Cowboys shot 37% from the field but were bolstered by a 7-for-17 performance from 3-point range and their near-perfect free-throw shooting.

The victory extends McNeese State’s winning streak to three games and solidifies its position atop the conference standings. For Lamar, the heartbreaking loss snaps a two-game win streak and serves as a second narrow defeat to the Cowboys this season, following an 82-70 loss in Lake Charles on Jan. 2.

McNeese State will look to continue its conference momentum on the road at Stephen F. Austin on Monday. Lamar will seek to regroup at home against Southeastern Louisiana, also on Monday.
