Wildcats Stay Unbeaten, Top Sun Devils in Big 12 Road Test
TEMPE, Ariz. (Interstat) — The top-ranked Arizona Wildcats, the nation’s last remaining undefeated team in men’s Division I basketball, faced a stern road test from their in-state rival but used a dominant second-half surge to pull away for an 87-74 victory over Arizona State on Saturday afternoon at Wells Fargo Arena.
In a game defined by physicality and runs, the Wildcats improved to 22-0 overall and 9-0 in Big 12 Conference play. The Sun Devils, who led briefly in the opening minutes and hung within single digits for much of the first half, fell to 11-11 and 3-6 in the conference.
The most important sequence of the contest came early in the second half, with Arizona holding a narrow 45-42 lead. Over the next four minutes, the Wildcats unleashed a decisive 14-3 run to seize control. The burst was fueled by their star guard, Brayden Burries, who scored on a driving layup, and a punishing inside game. Koa Peat contributed a layup and a dunk during the stretch, while Motiejus Krivas converted an offensive rebound into a putback. The run pushed Arizona’s lead to 59-45, a margin the Sun Devils could not seriously threaten again.
Burries, a sophomore from San Bernardino, California, led all scorers with 17 points, adding seven rebounds and four assists in 34 minutes. He was supported by a deep and talented Arizona frontcourt. Peat, a local product from Chandler, scored 21 points, and Lithuanian center Motiejus Krivas added 15 points, four rebounds and three blocks. The Wildcats’ interior defense was anchored by Tobe Awaka, who grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds and blocked two shots in just 20 minutes of action.
Arizona State was led by guard Noah Meeusen of Belgium, who scored 16 points and dished out five assists. Maurice Odum added 15 points, and Senegalese big man Massamba Diop chipped in 13 points, four rebounds and three blocks. The Sun Devils struggled with turnovers, committing several key ones during Arizona’s game-changing run in the second half.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair, featuring eight lead changes. Arizona State opened the scoring and held a slim 38-35 advantage after a Noah Meeusen three-pointer just before the halftime buzzer. The Wildcats, however, quickly erased that deficit after the break, setting the stage for their defining run.
Arizona’s victory extended its remarkable start to the season and completed a regular-season sweep of the Sun Devils, having also won 89-82 in Tucson on Jan. 14. The Wildcats’ perfect record will face significant tests in the coming weeks, with a road game at Kansas and a home matchup with Houston looming on the schedule.
Arizona State, which has shown flashes of competitiveness against top teams this season, will look to regroup on the road next week with trips to Utah and Colorado.
According to Interstat’s ELO system, Arizona entered with a 92.6% probability to win. The Wildcats covered the pregame spread of -15.5, and the total score of 161 fell under the over/under line of 163.5.
The game was played in front of a sellout crowd at Wells Fargo Arena and was organized by the Big 12 Conference.
