Preview: Cincinnati Bearcats at Houston Cougars
HOUSTON (Interstat) — The fourth-ranked Houston Cougars look to continue their dominant run through the Big 12 when they host the Cincinnati Bearcats at Hofheinz Pavilion on Saturday.
Houston (18-2, 7-1 Big 12) has established itself as a national contender, with its only losses coming in close road contests at Texas Tech and in non-conference play. The Cougars boast one of the nation’s most stifling defenses and are fueled by the high-scoring backcourt of Kingston Flemings.
Flemings, a sophomore guard, is averaging 26.3 points over his last three games, including a 42-point outburst in the loss at Texas Tech. He was instrumental in the first meeting with Cincinnati this season, posting 19 points and six assists in a 67-60 home win on Jan. 3.
Cincinnati (11-10, 4-4) arrives after a momentum-building 67-57 victory over Baylor on Wednesday. The Bearcats have struggled for consistency but are 3-1 in their last four games, with the lone loss a road defeat at Arizona State.
The Bearcats will rely heavily on forward Baba Miller, who is coming off an 18-point performance against Baylor. Miller, who scored 11 points against Houston earlier this month, has been a focal point, averaging 17.1 points over his last seven contests.
For Cincinnati to pull the upset, it must solve a Houston defense that ranks among the nation’s best in scoring and field goal percentage defense. The Cougars have held 13 opponents under 60 points this season.
The game is a rematch of the Jan. 3 clash in Cincinnati, where Houston used a 13-2 second-half run to secure the victory. The Bearcats will need to limit turnovers and find secondary scoring behind Miller to challenge the Cougars on their home floor, where Houston is 10-0 this season.
Saturday’s contest continues a rigorous stretch for both teams in the deep Big 12 conference. Houston will aim to protect its home court and maintain its position atop the league standings, while Cincinnati seeks a season-defining road victory to bolster its postseason resume.
