Preview: Texas Tech at UCF Set for Big 12 Showdown
OVIEDO, Fla. (Interstat) — A pivotal Big 12 Conference clash featuring two of the nation’s hottest teams will unfold Saturday when the Texas Tech Red Raiders visit the UCF Knights at CFE Arena.
Both teams enter with identical 16-4 overall records, mirror images of momentum in a deep conference race. Texas Tech (6-1 Big 12) has won six straight, including an impressive 90-86 victory over then-Houston last Saturday. UCF (5-2 Big 12) has won three of its last four, most recently edging Arizona State 79-76 on Tuesday.
The spotlight will be on a scintillating individual matchup. Texas Tech is powered by forward JT Toppin, who is playing at an All-American level. Over his last seven games, Toppin is averaging 24.0 points, 6.3 rebounds and 3.0 blocks, including a 31-point, 12-rebound performance in the win over Houston.
UCF counters with dynamic guard Riley Kugel, the engine of its offense. Kugel is averaging 17.3 points and 3.9 assists per game, coming off a 22-point outing in a road win at Colorado last weekend. His ability to penetrate and create will test a stout Red Raiders defense.
Texas Tech’s surge has been marked by high-scoring efficiency, averaging 88.5 points during its winning streak. Alongside Toppin, guards Jaylen Petty and Donovan Atwell have provided consistent secondary scoring.
The Knights have built their record on resilience, with four of their five conference wins coming by six points or fewer. Their home court has been a fortress, where they are 11-1 this season, including a signature 81-75 victory over then-Kansas on Jan. 3.
This marks the first meeting between the programs as Big 12 members. With both teams ranked and deadlocked in the loss column, Saturday’s result will carry significant weight for NCAA tournament seeding and conference standing.
Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. EST. The game will be broadcast on ESPN2.
Texas Tech’s next game is Monday at home against Kansas. UCF travels to face Houston on Wednesday.
