Saint Louis Routs Dayton in Atlantic 10 Men’s Basketball Showdown

ST. LOUIS (Interstat) — The Saint Louis Billikens, one of the nation’s most dominant teams this season, delivered a commanding performance Friday night, overwhelming the Dayton Flyers 102-71 in an Atlantic 10 men’s basketball game at a sold-out Chaifetz Arena.

The victory, witnessed by 10,277 fans, improved top-tier Saint Louis to 21-1 overall and further solidified its stature as a conference powerhouse. Dayton, a perennial contender in the league, fell to 14-7, suffering its third consecutive defeat.

The game’s most important sequence arrived early and decisively. After Dayton’s De’Shayne Montgomery hit a 3-pointer to cut an early Saint Louis lead to 8-5, the Billikens unleashed a devastating 14-2 run over the next four minutes. The surge was fueled by defensive pressure and efficient offense, featuring a 3-pointer from Trey Green, a three-point play by Quentin Jones, and capped by another Green triple that forced a Dayton timeout with the Billikens leading 22-7. That early blitz set an irreversible tone, establishing a double-digit margin Dayton would never seriously threaten.

Saint Louis never relented, leading 46-29 at halftime and expanding its advantage throughout the second half. The Billikens’ offensive execution was relentless, shooting a high percentage from the floor, from 3-point range, and from the free-throw line. Their defense was equally disruptive, forcing numerous Dayton turnovers that fueled their transition game.

Quentin Jones, a 6-foot-5 guard from Chicago, led Saint Louis with 18 points and five assists, orchestrating the offense with precision. He was complemented by a barrage of scoring from his teammates. Trey Green, a guard from Charlotte, North Carolina, poured in 23 points, while Ishan Sharma of Milton, Canada, added 18 off the bench. Dion Brown contributed 13 points, and Paul Otieno had eight points and key interior play.

For Dayton, which was outmatched on both ends, De’Shayne Montgomery of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, fought hard for a team-high 23 points. Amael L’Etang, the 7-foot-1 center from Toulouse, France, added 12 points and two blocks, and Malcolm Thomas of Mitchellville, Maryland, chipped in 11 points. But the Flyers could not match Saint Louis’s depth or sustained intensity.

The statistical projections heavily favored Saint Louis, which was installed as an 11-point pregame favorite. The Billikens not only covered that spread with ease but also saw the total score of 173 points sail far over the over/under line of 151, a testament to their offensive explosion.

Saint Louis, whose only loss this season came by a single point to Stanford in late November, continues to cruise through its schedule. Dayton, meanwhile, looks to regroup from this emphatic defeat as it continues a challenging stretch of conference play.

Saint Louis next travels to face Davidson on Tuesday. Dayton returns home to host Saint Bonaventure on the same night. The two teams are scheduled for a rematch in Dayton on Feb. 24.
