Preview: Hampton at Drexel in Key Colonial Athletic Association Matchup

PHILADELPHIA (Interstat) — Two teams seeking momentum in a muddled Colonial Athletic Association race will meet Thursday when the Hampton Pirates visit the Drexel Dragons.

The game at Daskalakis Athletic Center features identical 10-11 overall records for both programs. The contest is a pivotal opportunity for each to climb toward .500 in league play.

Hampton arrives after a 67-75 home loss to UNC Wilmington on Saturday, despite 17 points from Daniel Johnson and 14 points and six assists from guard Jalyke Gaines-Wyatt. The Pirates had won two straight prior to that defeat.

Gaines-Wyatt, a dynamic scorer and playmaker, is the focal point for Hampton. He is averaging 17.1 points over his last seven games, including a 24-point performance in a win over North Carolina A&T on Jan. 19. His ability to penetrate and create will test Drexel’s perimeter defense.

Drexel enters on a high note after an 83-78 victory over Northeastern, fueled by a breakout 22-point effort from forward Josh Reed in just 19 minutes off the bench. Reed’s recent surge provides a critical secondary scoring option alongside Shane Blakeney, who posted 14 points, four rebounds and four assists in the win.

The Dragons have found a rhythm defensively, holding three of their last five opponents under 60 points. Containing Gaines-Wyatt will be their primary challenge.

Historically, Drexel holds a 7-2 advantage in the series, but both teams are evenly matched this season. The winner will gain a valuable conference victory and a winning record in January, while the loser will fall two games below .500 with the February schedule looming.

Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. EST Thursday at Drexel’s Daskalakis Athletic Center.
