UCLA Rides Strong First Half to Road Win Over Oregon
EUGENE, Ore. (Interstat) — A suffocating defensive performance and a dominant opening half propelled the UCLA Bruins to a decisive 73-57 victory over the Oregon Ducks in a Big Ten Conference men’s basketball game Wednesday night at Matthew Knight Arena.
The Bruins, improving to 15-6 overall, seized control from the outset, holding the Ducks to a frigid 22 first-half points and building a 14-point halftime lead that Oregon never seriously threatened. The Ducks fell to 8-13.
The most critical phase of the game unfolded in the first 12 minutes, where UCLA’s defensive intensity completely stifled the Oregon offense. The Ducks managed just two field goals in the game’s first 11 minutes and 20 seconds, missing 13 of their first 15 shots from the floor. UCLA capitalized on this drought with a methodical 20-5 run, turning a narrow 5-4 edge into a commanding 25-9 advantage.
UCLA’s defense was multifaceted, contesting shots at the rim and harassing Oregon on the perimeter. The Bruins blocked four shots and recorded four steals, while Oregon’s offense sputtered, committing eight turnovers and managing only two assists for the entire game. The Ducks finished shooting 35.6% from the field and a dismal 28.1% from three-point range.
Offensively, UCLA was efficient and balanced. The Bruins shot 39.7% from the field but excelled at the free-throw line, converting 20 of 23 attempts. They also won the possession battle, scoring 73 points on 62 possessions for an offensive rating of 117.9, far superior to Oregon’s 94.6.
While Oregon’s Kwame Evans of Baltimore put forth a valiant individual effort, scoring a game-high 24 points, he received little consistent support. The Ducks’ next highest scorers were Jamari Phillips of Modesto, California, and Dezdrick Lindsay of Louisville, Kentucky, with nine and seven points, respectively.
UCLA countered with a deep and productive lineup. Tyler Bilodeau of Kennewick, Washington, led the Bruins with 18 points, while Donovan Dent of Riverside, California, orchestrated the offense with 15 points and a game-high four assists. Eric Dailey of Palmetto, Florida, added 14 points, and Trent Perry of West Covina, California, contributed 12 points and three assists.
The Bruins’ interior presence was also felt, with Xavier Booker of Indianapolis blocking two shots and altering several others during his 19 minutes.
Oregon showed more life after halftime, outscoring UCLA 35-37 in the second period, but the deficit was too large to overcome. Every time the Ducks strung together a few baskets, UCLA answered, usually at the free-throw line or with a key stop, preventing any sustained rally.
The victory marked UCLA’s second win over Oregon this season, following a 74-63 home win on Dec. 6. It also continued a positive stretch for the Bruins, who have now won four of their last five conference games.
UCLA will look to continue its momentum when it hosts Indiana on Saturday. Oregon, mired in a three-game losing streak, will aim to regroup when it hosts Iowa on Sunday.
The game, played before an announced crowd of 5,721, saw UCLA cover the pregame spread as a 2.5-point favorite. The total points scored, 130, fell under the projected over/under line of 139.
