Houston Holds Off Texas Christian Rally for Big 12 Road Win
FORT WORTH, Texas (Interstat) — In a rugged Big 12 Conference clash defined by defense and timely shot-making, the Houston Cougars built a substantial early lead and withstood a fierce second-half rally from Texas Christian to secure a 79-70 victory Wednesday night at Dickies Arena.
The win improved Houston’s record to 18-2 overall, while TCU fell to 13-8.
The game’s decisive stretch came early, as Houston’s trademark defensive pressure and efficient offense established a commanding advantage. The Cougars opened the game on a 9-0 run, punctuated by a Kingston Flemings jump shot and a Chris Cenac Jr. dunk. Houston’s defense forced the Horned Frogs into difficult shots and turnovers, allowing the Cougars to methodically extend their lead. By halftime, Houston led 43-30, having held TCU to just 30 points on the period.
Flemings, Houston’s standout guard from San Antonio, was instrumental in building that cushion, scoring 15 of his game-high 27 points before the break. His backcourt mate, Emanuel Sharp of Tampa, Florida, added 12 first-half points as the Cougars shot 50% from the field and connected on five three-pointers in the opening 20 minutes.
The second half presented a starkly different challenge. TCU, led by the interior presence of Xavier Edmonds and the playmaking of David Punch, mounted a sustained comeback. The Horned Frogs began attacking the paint with purpose, outscoring Houston 36-20 in the lane for the game. A driving layup by Edmonds cut the Houston lead to 54-49 with just over 10 minutes remaining, sending a surge of energy through the crowd of 6,863.
The most critical sequence of the game unfolded as TCU threatened to complete its comeback. With Houston’s offense stalling and the lead precarious, the Cougars turned again to Flemings. He answered a Liutauras Lelevicius three-pointer with one of his own to push the lead back to seven. Then, after a TCU turnover, Flemings found Milos Uzan for a clutch three-pointer from the wing with 3:27 left, extending the advantage to 61-58 and halting the Horned Frogs’ momentum.
From there, Houston sealed the game at the free-throw line. The Cougars were a remarkable 22 of 24 from the stripe, including a perfect 10-for-10 performance in the final three minutes. Sharp and Ramon Walker each hit two crucial pairs in the closing seconds to keep TCU at bay.
While TCU won several statistical battles, including points in the paint and a higher field goal percentage (47.2% to 44.4%), Houston’s advantages from beyond the arc and at the free-throw line proved decisive. The Cougars made nine three-pointers to TCU’s four and outscored the Horned Frogs by 12 points at the line. Houston also committed two fewer turnovers and posted a superior offensive rating of 113.8 points per 100 possessions.
Flemings finished with 27 points and five assists in 34 minutes, continuing a stellar stretch of play. Sharp contributed 23 points. For TCU, Edmonds, a forward from Long Beach, California, was a force inside with 18 points and nine rebounds. Punch, from Harker Heights, Texas, tallied 16 points, six assists and a blocked shot.
The victory allowed Houston to bounce back from a road loss at Texas Tech its last time out and maintain its position atop the Big 12 standings. TCU, coming off an impressive road win at Baylor, saw its two-game winning streak snapped as it struggled to overcome the early deficit against one of the nation’s most disciplined teams.
Houston will host Cincinnati on Saturday, while Texas Christian travels to face Colorado on Sunday.
