Aggies Outlast Highlanders in Big West Contest

DAVIS, Calif. (Interstat) — Nils Cooper scored 19 points and UC Davis used a decisive first-half surge to create separation and held off a persistent UC Riverside team for a 74-66 victory in a Big West Conference men’s basketball game Saturday at The Pavilion at ARC.

The Aggies improved to 12-8 overall and evened their conference record, while the Highlanders fell to 7-14.

The most critical stretch of the game came early, as UC Davis transformed a narrow 10-7 lead into a commanding 19-7 advantage over a three-minute span. The run was fueled by stifling defense and efficient transition play. It began with a Brayden Fagbemi 3-pointer, continued with a Connor Sevilla jump shot, and was capped by a Nils Cooper dunk off a feed from Niko Rocak. During this surge, UC Riverside committed three turnovers and missed two free throws, allowing the Aggies to seize control.

UC Davis maintained that cushion for the remainder of the half, taking a 36-30 lead into the break. The Aggies’ offensive efficiency was the story, scoring 74 points on just 67 possessions for an offensive rating of 110.7. They shot 50% from the field (25 of 50) and 43.8% from 3-point range (7 of 16). UC Riverside, by contrast, managed an offensive rating of 92.9, shooting 42.1% overall (24 of 57) and 32% from beyond the arc (8 of 25). The Highlanders also struggled at the free-throw line, making only 10 of 19 attempts.

Cooper, a 6-foot-6 guard from Santa Monica, California, led all scorers and added five assists. His backcourt mate, Connor Sevilla of San Ramon, California, added 14 points. The Aggies’ frontcourt provided significant contributions as 6-foot-9 forward Isaiah Chappell of Los Angeles scored 14 points and blocked two shots, and 6-foot-9 forward Niko Rocak of Geneva, Switzerland, filled the stat sheet with nine points, five assists and a block.

UC Riverside was led by Marqui Worthy’s 18 points. The 6-foot-3 guard from Anaheim, California, was active defensively but also committed a game-high five turnovers. Andrew Henderson, a 6-foot-5 guard from Los Angeles, added 16 points and four assists for the Highlanders.

The Highlanders made several pushes in the second half, closing to within four points on multiple occasions. A driving layup by Worthy with 11:22 remaining cut the UC Davis lead to 52-48 and prompted an Aggies timeout. Each time, however, UC Davis had an answer, often from Cooper or Chappell, to stabilize its lead.

A key sequence came with just over four minutes to play. After a Ben Waller 3-pointer brought UC Riverside to within 63-60, Isaiah Chappell responded immediately with a crucial 3-pointer on the other end to push the lead back to six. The Highlanders would not get closer than five points the rest of the way, as the Aggies sealed the game at the free-throw line, making 17 of 25 attempts overall.

Despite the loss, UC Riverside won the turnover battle, forcing 11 Aggie mistakes and converting them into 23 points. UC Davis scored 13 points off 12 Highlander turnovers. Both teams scored 30 points in the paint.

The victory was a bounce-back performance for UC Davis, which lost at home to UC San Diego in its previous outing. UC Riverside has now lost two straight following a win over Cal State Fullerton last weekend.

The teams are scheduled to meet again in Riverside on Feb. 21. UC Davis will travel to face Cal State Northridge on Thursday. UC Riverside returns home to host Long Beach State, also on Thursday.
