Cowboys Overwhelm Privateers With Defense, Transition Game
LAKE CHARLES, La. (Interstat) — Larry Johnson scored 26 points and the McNeese State Cowboys capitalized on a torrent of New Orleans turnovers to roll to an 82-63 victory in a Southland Conference men’s basketball game Saturday at Burton Coliseum.
The Cowboys, improving to 16-4 overall, used a stifling defensive effort to overwhelm the Privateers from the opening tip. McNeese State forced 21 turnovers, converting them into 31 points, while committing only eight of their own. The Cowboys also dominated the glass with a 16-7 advantage in offensive rebounds, leading to a 38-24 edge in points in the paint.
Johnson, a 6-foot-4 guard from Savannah, Georgia, was efficient in his 26 minutes, adding eight rebounds and five assists. His backcourt mate, Garwey Dual, contributed 14 points, five rebounds and two assists. The Cowboys’ ball movement was superior, tallying 16 assists to just five for New Orleans.
The most important stretch of the game came early, as McNeese State set a disruptive tone. After New Orleans won the opening tip, the Cowboys forced a miss and Johnson scored on a driving layup on the game’s first possession. Just over 30 seconds later, a steal by Tyshawn Archie led to a Jerrell Colbert hook shot. Another Privateers turnover, this one by Coleton Benson, was stolen by Johnson and quickly turned into another Johnson layup, giving McNeese State a 6-0 lead before the first media timeout.
New Orleans, which fell to 8-13, never recovered from the early pressure. Despite shooting a respectable 45.5 percent from the field, the Privateers’ offensive possessions were crippled by the Cowboys’ active hands, which produced 16 steals. McNeese State’s offense, while shooting just 41.3 percent overall, generated far more opportunities, attempting 19 more field goals and 15 more free throws than the visitors.
Coleton Benson led New Orleans with 23 points, hitting five 3-pointers. Tavaj Cope added 12 points and MJ Thomas had 11 points and eight rebounds. But the Privateers’ primary ball-handlers struggled mightily against the McNeese State defense, as Jakevion Buckley and Benson combined for 11 of the team’s turnovers.
The Cowboys steadily built their lead throughout the first half, using a 12-2 run midway through the period to open a 28-16 advantage. A technical foul on the McNeese State bench just before halftime allowed New Orleans to trim the deficit to 42-34, but any momentum was quickly extinguished after the break.
McNeese State opened the second half with a 9-2 spurt, capped by a Tyshawn Archie dunk off a Javohn Garcia assist, to push the lead to 51-36. Archie finished with 10 points and four assists. The Cowboys’ lead ballooned to as many as 22 points in the final minutes as they cruised to their tenth win in the last 12 games.
The victory keeps McNeese State near the top of the Southland Conference standings, while New Orleans continues to search for consistency in league play. The teams are scheduled to meet again in New Orleans on Feb. 28.
McNeese State travels to face Southeastern Louisiana on Monday, while New Orleans visits Nicholls State the same night.
