Army at Navy
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (Interstat) — The historic Army-Navy rivalry shifts to the hardwood Saturday when the Navy men’s basketball team hosts Army at Alumni Hall in a key Patriot League matchup.
Navy (14-6, 5-2 Patriot) enters riding high, having won six of its last seven games. The Midshipmen are coming off an 85-68 rout of Holy Cross on Wednesday, powered by a career-high 29 points from standout guard Aidan Kehoe. Kehoe has been dominant, averaging over 20 points per game in his last six contests, including a 23-point, 11-rebound performance against Lafayette on Jan. 10.
Army (8-12, 2-5) snapped a five-game skid with an 87-84 overtime win at Bucknell on Wednesday. The Black Knights will look to build on that momentum behind guard Jacen Holloway, who scored 17 points in the victory and had 21 points in a loss to American on Jan. 18. Consistency has been a challenge for Army, which has played four overtime games in its last 10 outings.
The game features a stark contrast in season trajectories. Navy sits near the top of the conference standings, while Army is near the bottom. However, records are often secondary in this fierce rivalry, which will see its second installment this season at West Point on Feb. 21.
Navy’s defense, which has held opponents under 60 points four times this season, will be tested by an Army offense that averages over 75 points per game in league play. The Midshipmen counter with a balanced attack; in the win over Holy Cross, Austin Benigni added 25 points and Jinwoo Kim had 18.
The matchup at point guard between Navy’s Kehoe and Army’s Holloway will be critical. Kehoe’s scoring versatility and rebounding for his position provide a unique challenge, while Holloway’s ability to penetrate and create will be key for the Black Knights to spring an upset on the road.
Tipoff is set for Saturday afternoon at Navy’s Alumni Hall.
