Charleston Holds Off Elon Behind Reeves’ Dominant Performance
CHARLESTON, S.C. (Interstat) — Christian Reeves delivered a dominant performance with 29 points and 18 rebounds, powering the College of Charleston to an 80-70 victory over Elon in a Colonial Athletic Association men’s basketball game Saturday afternoon at TD Arena.
The 7-foot-1 center from Charlotte, North Carolina, controlled the paint on both ends, shooting 12 of 16 from the field and adding a block as the Cougars improved to 13-8 overall. His 18 rebounds matched Elon’s total team output on the offensive glass and helped Charleston secure a 42-34 advantage in points in the paint.
The most critical sequence of the game came late in the second half with Charleston protecting a narrow lead. Leading 70-67 with just over four minutes remaining, the Cougars engineered a decisive 7-0 run. Colby Duggan, who finished with 17 points and five assists, ignited the spurt with a dunk off an assist from Chadlyn Traylor. After an Elon miss, Duggan buried a three-pointer, again from a Traylor pass, to push the lead to 10 points with 4:24 to play. Elon never recovered, getting no closer than eight points the rest of the way.
Elon, which fell to 12-9, was led by Chandler Cuthrell’s 20 points and seven rebounds. Bryson Cokley added 14 points and Randall Pettus scored 16, but the Phoenix struggled mightily from beyond the arc, connecting on just 5 of 28 three-point attempts. That 17.9% shooting from deep undermined an otherwise competitive effort that saw Elon force 16 Charleston turnovers and record 11 steals.
The Cougars were efficient offensively, shooting 52.7% from the field compared to Elon’s 41.3%. Charleston also capitalized at the free-throw line down the stretch, making 16 of 26 attempts, while Elon went 13 for 18. Martin Kalu contributed 10 points for the home team, and Jlynn Counter dished out a game-high six assists.
The game was a contrast in offensive execution. Charleston scored 80 points on 73 possessions for an offensive rating of 109.1, while Elon managed 70 points on 74 trips, a rating of 95.2. The Cougars also held a 7-2 advantage in blocked shots.
The victory completed a regular-season sweep for College of Charleston, which also defeated Elon 85-81 on Dec. 31. Reeves, coming off a 21-point effort in a win over Campbell on Thursday, continued his strong play, providing a consistent interior presence that Elon could not counter.
Elon’s Ja’Juan Carr finished with nine points and five assists. The Phoenix, which had won two of its last three games entering the contest, was unable to sustain any offensive rhythm outside of sporadic bursts, notably failing to score any fast-break points.
The game’s total of 150 points fell well under the betting over/under line of 159.5. According to Interstat’s ELO system, Charleston was projected with an 82.4% probability to win.
Both teams continue CAA play on Thursday. Elon returns home to face William & Mary, while College of Charleston travels to face Hofstra.
