Michigan Uses Second-Half Surge to Defeat Ohio State in Big Ten Matchup

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (Interstat) — In a showcase of depth and defensive prowess, the Michigan Wolverines used a dominant second-half surge to pull away from the Ohio State Buckeyes for a 74-62 victory in a Big Ten Conference men’s basketball game Friday night at a sold-out Crisler Center.

A crowd of 12,707 watched the Wolverines, now 18-1 overall, overcome a spirited effort from the Buckeyes, who fell to 13-6. The game was a tale of two halves, with Michigan leading by just three points at halftime before outscoring Ohio State 41-32 after the break to secure its 18th win in 19 games this season.

The contest’s pivotal stretch arrived early in the second half. After Ohio State guard John Mobley opened the period with a transition jumper to cut the deficit to 33-32, Michigan responded with a decisive 14-2 run over the next four minutes. The burst was fueled by the interior presence of forward Yaxel Lendeborg and the playmaking of guard Elliot Cadeau. Lendeborg scored six points during the run, including a layup off a Cadeau steal and assist, while Cadeau’s orchestration kept the Buckeyes’ defense scrambling. The run culminated with a driving layup by Lendeborg that pushed Michigan’s lead to 47-34, forcing an Ohio State timeout.

Ohio State never recovered from that deficit. The Buckeyes, led by Mobley’s game-high 22 points, managed to trim the lead to nine points on several occasions, but each time Michigan had an answer. The Wolverines’ balanced attack and ability to generate turnovers—converting several into easy transition baskets—proved too much for the visitors to overcome.

Michigan’s victory was a collective effort. Lendeborg, a forward from Pennsauken, New Jersey, finished with 18 points, four assists, and was a constant force on both ends. Center Aday Mara of Zaragoza, Spain, provided a formidable rim-protecting presence, blocking four shots while adding 11 points and anchoring the defense. Forward Morez Johnson Jr. contributed 12 points and several key rebounds, while guard Trey McKenney added 12 points off the bench. Cadeau directed the offense with eight assists.

For Ohio State, Mobley, a guard from Reynoldsburg, Ohio, shouldered the scoring load with his 22 points in 34 minutes. Center Christoph Tilly of Berlin, Germany, provided an inside counter with 17 points. Guard Bruce Thornton added 10 points for the Buckeyes, who struggled to find consistent offense outside of their top performers and were hampered by 15 turnovers, which Michigan converted into 19 points.

The first half was a tightly contested affair, featuring eight lead changes. Ohio State’s defense initially contained the high-powered Michigan offense, and the Buckeyes took a brief 20-19 lead on a 3-pointer by Mobley midway through the period. However, the Wolverines closed the half on a 14-10 spurt, capped by a driving layup from guard LJ Cason in the final minute, to take a 33-30 advantage into the locker room.

The second half, however, belonged entirely to Michigan. The Wolverines shot 48 percent from the field after halftime and held Ohio State to 39 percent shooting, steadily expanding their lead. A late 3-pointer from Cadeau and a dunk from Lendeborg in the final minutes punctuated the victory, sending the home crowd into a frenzy as Michigan remained perfect in conference play at home.

The win reinforces Michigan’s status as a premier team in the Big Ten, while Ohio State will look to regroup as it continues a challenging stretch of conference games. The two teams are scheduled to meet again in Columbus on Sunday, Feb. 8.
