Saint Louis Dominates Saint Bonaventure in Atlantic 10 Road Victory
KNAPP CREEK, N.Y. (Interstat) — The Saint Louis Billikens delivered a dominant wire-to-wire performance, overwhelming the Saint Bonaventure Bonnies 97-62 in an Atlantic 10 men’s basketball game Friday night at the Reilly Center.
The most important part of the game was the first half, where Saint Louis established a staggering 32-point lead that rendered the final 20 minutes a formality. The Billikens opened the contest with a blistering 17-3 run, fueled by early three-pointers from Trey Green and Robbie Avila. The onslaught continued unabated, with Saint Louis shooting a scorching 13 of 22 from three-point range in the opening period. A defining sequence came late in the half when Ishan Sharma, who entered the game off the bench, hit back-to-back three-pointers in the final 51 seconds, the second coming off a Quentin Jones assist, to send the Billikens into the locker room with a commanding 58-26 advantage.
Saint Louis, now 19-1 overall and leading the conference, showcased a devastatingly efficient offense. The Billikens scored 97 points on just 71 possessions, an elite offensive rating of 136.1, and shot 57.8% from the field. Their 19 made three-pointers on 33 attempts, a 57.6% clip, proved the primary weapon in the dismantling.
Saint Bonaventure, which fell to 12-8, struggled mightily to match Saint Louis’s firepower. The Bonnies shot 34.4% overall and a frigid 4 of 22 from beyond the arc, managing an offensive rating of just 84.5. They were out-assisted 8-4 and gave up 19 points off their 11 turnovers.
Ishan Sharma led all scorers with 29 points for Saint Louis, hitting 9 of 14 shots, including 7 of 11 from three-point range, in just 23 minutes. His outburst marked a significant uptick from his recent performances. Trey Green added 15 points, all from three-pointers, while Amari McCottry contributed 12 points. Robbie Avila orchestrated the offense with five assists to go with nine points.
For Saint Bonaventure, Dasonte Bowen scored 17 points and Darryl Simmons added 12. Andrew Osasuyi provided a defensive bright spot with five blocked shots.
The Billikens’ defense was equally disruptive, tallying eight steals and seven blocks. They controlled the game’s tempo, scoring 17 fast-break points to the Bonnies’ six and dominating the interior with a 36-28 edge in points in the paint despite the perimeter-focused attack.
The victory, witnessed by a crowd of 4,023, extended Saint Louis’s winning streak and solidified its status as the Atlantic 10 frontrunner. The Billikens covered the pregame spread of -8.5 with ease, though the combined score of 159 fell just under the over/under line of 157.5.
Saint Louis will look to continue its momentum when it hosts George Washington on Tuesday. Saint Bonaventure aims to regroup on the road at Duquesne next Wednesday.
