Gauchos Overwhelm Mustangs in Record-Setting Big West Rout

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (Interstat) — The UC Santa Barbara Gauchos delivered an offensive clinic of historic efficiency Thursday night, dismantling the visiting Cal Poly Mustangs 107-67 in a Big West Conference men’s basketball game at the Thunderdome.

From the opening tip, the Gauchos (12-7, 3-3 Big West) operated with surgical precision, building a 59-33 halftime lead and never relenting. The 40-point margin of victory was fueled by a staggering shooting performance. UC Santa Barbara connected on 66.7% of its field goals, hitting 42 of 63 attempts, and was equally potent from beyond the arc, making 15 of 29 three-pointers for a 51.7% clip.

The most important part of the game was the Gauchos’ immediate and overwhelming offensive eruption in the first half, which effectively decided the contest within the first ten minutes. UC Santa Barbara scored on its first three possessions, including a dunk by Marvin McGhee and a three-pointer from Colin Smith, to establish a quick 8-2 lead. The Gauchos then unleashed a 14-2 run, capped by consecutive layups from Zion Sensley and Miro Little, to surge ahead 22-8 with just over 15 minutes remaining in the half. Cal Poly (7-13, 2-5) never recovered from this initial blitz, as the Gauchos’ ball movement and shot-making created an insurmountable deficit.

The offensive rating of 154.6 for UC Santa Barbara, compared to Cal Poly’s 99.3, underscored the chasm in efficiency. The Gauchos scored 107 points on just 69 possessions, a testament to their ability to generate high-quality shots with minimal waste. They also won the turnover battle, committing nine to Cal Poly’s 13, and converted those into transition opportunities.

Miro Little, a guard from Tampere, Finland, orchestrated the onslaught with a double-double, dishing out 11 assists to go with 12 points in just 22 minutes. His playmaking was the engine for an offense that saw six Gauchos score in double figures. Zion Sensley led all scorers with 20 points on 8-of-11 shooting, while CJ Shaw added 16 points. Aidan Mahaney scored 15, Colin Smith had 11 points and four assists, and Zachiah Clark provided a spark off the bench with 12 points in only 10 minutes.

Cal Poly, which shot 46.9% from the field, was led by Hamad Mousa’s 10 points and three assists. Aaron Price added eight points. The Mustangs were hampered by the Gauchos’ defensive activity, which produced 10 steals.

The victory allowed UC Santa Barbara to even its conference record and bounce back from a 93-86 home loss to UC Davis in its previous outing. Cal Poly, which had won two of its last three, saw a modest positive streak snapped decisively.

A crowd of 3,821 at the Thunderdome watched the Gauchos surpass the century mark for the third time this season. The 107 points were a season-high for UC Santa Barbara and the most allowed by Cal Poly this year.

The Gauchos, who were installed as 8.5-point favorites, easily covered the spread. The combined score of 174 points sailed over the over/under line of 160.

UC Santa Barbara travels to face Long Beach State on Saturday. Cal Poly returns home to host Cal State Fullerton the same day. The two teams will meet again in San Luis Obispo on Feb. 14.
