Williams Leads Mercer Past Western Carolina in Southern Conference Matchup
MACON, Ga. (Interstat) — The Mercer Bears, powered by a dominant first-half performance and a trio of high-scoring guards, pulled away from the Western Carolina Catamounts for an 88-76 victory in a Southern Conference men’s basketball game Wednesday night at Hawkins Arena.
A crowd of 1,084 watched Mercer improve to 13-7 overall and 4-3 in the conference, while Western Carolina fell to 6-12 and 2-5.
The game was effectively decided in the opening 20 minutes, as Mercer capitalized on a catastrophic start by the visiting Catamounts. Western Carolina committed nine turnovers in the first nine minutes, leading to a 17-2 Mercer run that established a double-digit lead the Bears would never relinquish. The Bears’ defensive pressure was relentless, finishing the game with 10 steals and forcing 14 total turnovers, which they converted into 19 points.
Zaire Williams, a junior guard from Brooklyn, N.Y., led all scorers with 23 points and added five assists for Mercer, continuing his strong recent form. He was complemented by backcourt mates Baraka Okojie of Brampton, Canada, who scored 19 points, and Armani Mighty of Toronto, who controlled the interior with 20 points, nine offensive rebounds, and two blocks. The trio combined for 62 points on efficient shooting, anchoring an offense that posted a stellar 127.0 rating by scoring 88 points on just 69 possessions.
Western Carolina, which shot a frigid 27 of 65 from the field, was plagued by poor ball movement and decision-making from the outset. The Catamounts managed only four assists against their 14 turnovers, a ratio that underscored their offensive struggles. They finished with an offensive rating of 106.9.
The most important stretch of the game came immediately after tip-off. After Mercer’s Kyle Cuffe opened the scoring with two free throws, Western Carolina turnovers on three consecutive possessions fueled a rapid 9-0 Bears spurt. A steal and dunk by Williams made it 5-0, followed by a Brady Shoulders layup and another Williams dunk, forcing a Western Carolina timeout just over two minutes into the game with the score 9-0. The Catamounts never recovered, trailing 41-24 at halftime after shooting 32 percent in the opening period.
To their credit, the Catamounts showed fight after the break, scoring 52 second-half points. A 12-4 run midway through the half, capped by a Tahlan Pettway 3-pointer, brought Western Carolina within 68-60 with 12:37 to play. Pettway finished with 11 points.
Mercer responded immediately to every threat. Following the Pettway three, the Bears answered with a Quinton Perkins layup and a Tristan Gross three-pointer to push the lead back to 13. Western Carolina would get no closer than nine points the rest of the way, as Mercer’s offense consistently found answers, often through Williams or Mighty in the paint.
Justin Johnson led Western Carolina with 14 points, while Samuel Dada and Julien Soumaoro each added 11. Soumaoro also had four assists.
Mercer, which entered the game as a 9.5-point favorite according to sportsbooks, covered the spread with the 12-point victory. The total score of 164 points surpassed the over/under line of 160. Interstat’s ELO system had given Mercer an 86.3 percent probability to win.
The Bears finished with significant advantages in assists (10-4), points off turnovers (19-9), second-chance points (24-15), and bench points (30-19). While Western Carolina won the battle on the glass with 15 offensive rebounds to Mercer’s 18, they could not overcome their early mistakes or match Mercer’s offensive efficiency.
Mercer next travels to face Wofford on Saturday. Western Carolina returns home to host Virginia Military Institute, also on Saturday.
