UNC Greensboro at Virginia Military Institute
LEXINGTON, Va. (Interstat) — Two Southern Conference men’s basketball teams seeking momentum will meet Wednesday when the UNC Greensboro Spartans visit the Virginia Military Institute Keydets at Cameron Hall.
Both teams enter with losing records, as UNCG sits at 7-12 overall and VMI is 6-13. The matchup represents a chance for either squad to build consistency in conference play.
The Spartans are coming off a 102-92 home loss to Mercer on Saturday, despite a 21-point effort from guard KJ Younger. Younger has been a bright spot, averaging 15.3 points over his last six games, including a 24-point performance in a win over Chattanooga on Jan. 1. UNCG has shown flashes, with three wins in its last six outings, but has struggled defensively, allowing an average of 87.5 points in its four losses during that stretch.
VMI looks to snap a four-game skid, most recently an 82-68 home defeat to The Citadel. The Keydets have relied heavily on guard TJ Johnson, who is averaging 19.0 points over his last six contests. Johnson scored 30 points in a loss at East Tennessee State on Jan. 7 and has been a workhorse, logging 36 or more minutes in five of those six games. VMI’s offense has stalled during its losing streak, failing to reach 70 points in three of the four games.
The game will feature a contrast in recent results. UNCG has found more success in close games, winning two of its last three decided by five points or fewer, including an overtime victory over The Citadel. VMI has lost its last four by an average of 14.3 points.
This is the first of two regular-season meetings between the teams this season. They will play again in Greensboro on Feb. 11.
Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. EST Wednesday in Lexington.
