Rhode Island at Richmond
RICHMOND, Va. (Interstat) — The Richmond Spiders will look to protect their home court and solidify their position in the Atlantic 10 Conference standings when they host the Rhode Island Rams on Wednesday night at the Robins Center.
Richmond (13-6, 3-3 A-10) enters the contest seeking consistency after a lopsided 88-63 road loss at Saint Louis last Saturday. The Spiders had won three of their previous four conference games prior to that defeat. Their success often hinges on the play of forward AJ Lopez, who is coming off a 20-point performance against the Billikens and has averaged 17.1 points over his last seven games.
Rhode Island (10-8, 1-4) aims to snap a two-game skid and gain momentum in league play. The Rams fell 84-75 to VCU in their most recent outing on Jan. 14. Guard RJ Johnson led the Rams with 16 points in that loss and has been a key contributor, including a seven-assist effort in a 70-45 win at Davidson on Jan. 10.
The matchup features a contrast in recent trajectories. The Spiders have been strong at home this season, while the Rams have struggled away from Kingston, dropping their last three road contests. Richmond will rely on its defense, which held La Salle to 53 points in a win on Jan. 14, to contain a Rhode Island offense that has been held under 62 points in three of its four A-10 losses.
This game marks the first of two regular-season meetings between the teams. They are scheduled to meet again in Kingston on Feb. 7.
Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. EST Wednesday. The game will be a test of Richmond’s ability to rebound from a poor performance and Rhode Island’s capacity to secure a crucial conference road victory.
