Troy at Old Dominion

NORFOLK, Va. (Interstat) — A surging Troy team looks to continue its climb in the Sun Belt Conference standings when it visits struggling Old Dominion on Wednesday night.

The Trojans (13-6) have won five of their last six games, including a dominant 99-74 victory over Arkansas State on Saturday. They will face a Monarchs squad (6-14) that snapped a three-game skid with a narrow 75-73 road win at Appalachian State that same day.

The matchup at the Constant Convocation Center pits one of the league’s hottest players against a home team seeking consistency. Troy is led by dynamic guard Victor Valdes, who is coming off a spectacular 17-point, 14-assist performance against Arkansas State. Over his last seven games, Valdes is averaging 13.6 points and 6.3 assists, serving as the catalyst for a Troy offense that has scored 90 or more points in four of its last six contests.

Old Dominion will counter with guard Jordan Battle, who erupted for a season-high 25 points in the win over Appalachian State. Battle has been a bright spot for the Monarchs, averaging 13.1 points per game in conference play, but the team has struggled defensively, allowing 80.4 points per game during its recent 2-5 stretch.

The teams are on divergent paths. Troy’s only loss since late December was a road defeat at Arkansas State, and its efficient offense presents a major challenge. Old Dominion, meanwhile, has lost nine of its last 12 and will need another standout performance from Battle and improved defensive effort to slow the Trojan attack.

Wednesday’s game is the only scheduled meeting between the schools this season. Troy visits Georgia Southern next on Saturday, while Old Dominion hosts Louisiana-Lafayette.
