Longwood Dominates Gardner-Webb in Big South Conference Matchup
FARMVILLE, Va. (Interstat) — The Longwood Lancers delivered a dominant wire-to-wire performance Wednesday night, overwhelming the Gardner-Webb Runnin’ Bulldogs 91-56 in a Big South Conference men’s basketball game at Willett Hall.
The victory improved Longwood to 11-10 overall, while Gardner-Webb’s struggles deepened as they fell to 2-19. The game was never in doubt, with the Lancers leveraging superior efficiency and a disruptive defense to build a commanding lead early and never relent.
Longwood’s offensive execution was clinical. The Lancers scored 91 points on just 70 possessions, translating to an offensive rating of 129.8, a mark of elite efficiency. They shot 55.4% from the field, connecting on 36 of 65 attempts. Gardner-Webb, by contrast, managed only 56 points on 74 possessions, an offensive rating of 76.0, and shot 38.6% on 22-of-57 shooting.
The defensive pressure from the Lancers was equally decisive. Longwood forced 21 Gardner-Webb turnovers, converting them into numerous transition opportunities, and recorded 14 steals. Gardner-Webb, meanwhile, generated only nine steals off 12 Longwood turnovers. The Lancers also controlled the glass, securing 14 offensive rebounds to Gardner-Webb’s 10.
The most important stretch of the game came early, effectively deciding the contest before the first media timeout. After Gardner-Webb’s DJ Jefferson opened the scoring with a 3-pointer, Longwood seized complete control with a devastating 20-2 run. The surge was fueled by defensive intensity and efficient scoring. Elijah Tucker of Longwood scored inside, Emanuel Richards hit a three, and Jacoi Hutchinson converted a steal into a layup. Alphonzo Billups, coming off the bench, capped the run with a 3-pointer, pushing the Longwood lead to 20-4 and silencing any notion of an upset. Gardner-Webb never recovered, as the Lancers’ lead ballooned to 18 points by halftime, 42-24, and continued to grow in the second half.
Elijah Tucker led all scorers with 21 points for Longwood, adding two blocks and showcasing his athleticism around the rim. Jacoi Hutchinson orchestrated the offense masterfully, posting a double-double with 14 points and 10 assists. Alphonzo Billups provided a significant spark off the bench with 15 points, while Emanuel Richards added 11. Jaylen Benard also reached double figures with 10 points.
For Gardner-Webb, DJ Jefferson was the lone player to score in double figures, finishing with 10 points. Jacob Hogarth added nine points. The Runnin’ Bulldogs were hampered by poor shooting from beyond the arc, making only 5 of 19 attempts, and from the free-throw line, where they hit just 7 of 12.
A crowd of 1,315 at Willett Hall watched as Longwood methodically extended its advantage in the second half, leading by as many as 35 points. The Lancers’ ball movement was superior, tallying 14 assists to Gardner-Webb’s nine, and their ability to score in the paint and in transition proved overwhelming.
The result aligned with pregame projections, as Longwood was installed as a 14.5-point favorite. The combined score of 147 points fell under the over/under line of 157.
Gardner-Webb will look to halt its skid when it hosts South Carolina Upstate on Saturday. Longwood returns to action the same day, hosting Charleston Southern in another conference matchup.
