Spartans Overpower Ducks in Eugene for Big Ten Road Win

EUGENE, Ore. (Interstat) — In a methodical and defensively dominant performance, the Michigan State Spartans steadily pulled away from the Oregon Ducks for a 68-52 victory in a nonconference men’s basketball game Tuesday night at Matthew Knight Arena.

The Spartans, improving to 17-2 overall, used a 14-0 run spanning the end of the first half and the start of the second to break open a close contest and never looked back. The Ducks, struggling to find consistent offense, fell to 8-11.

The game’s pivotal sequence began with Michigan State clinging to a 28-26 lead in the final minute of the first half. After Oregon’s Ege Demir scored on a tip-in to cut the deficit to two, the Spartans’ Divine Ugochukwu answered with a 3-pointer just before the halftime buzzer, assisted by Jeremy Fears, to push the lead to 31-26.

That momentum carried into the second half. Michigan State opened the period with an 11-0 burst, capped by a Coen Carr 3-pointer, to extend the lead to 42-26 within the first three minutes. Oregon went scoreless for a stretch of nearly five minutes of game time across the halves, a drought from which it never recovered.

The most important part of the game was this decisive stretch, where Michigan State’s defensive intensity completely overwhelmed Oregon. The Spartans forced turnovers and contested shots, while their own offense, led by center Carson Cooper, executed with efficiency to transform a narrow margin into a commanding lead.

Cooper was the standout performer, dominating the interior for Michigan State. The 6-foot-11 junior from Jackson, Michigan, scored 19 points, collected four blocks and anchored a Spartan defense that held Oregon to just 26 points in each half. His presence in the paint altered countless Oregon attempts and provided a reliable scoring option on the other end.

Jeremy Fears orchestrated the Michigan State attack, contributing 14 points and five assists. His backcourt mate, Coen Carr, added 15 points, three assists and two blocks, providing athleticism on both ends of the floor. Trey Fort provided a key spark off the bench with nine points, all in the first half, to help the Spartans maintain an early edge.

Oregon was led by Takai Simpkins, who scored 15 points, but the Ducks shot poorly from the field and committed costly turnovers against the staunch Spartan defense. Sean Stewart added five points and two assists for Oregon, which failed to have a player reach double figures in assists as a team and could not string together enough scores to mount a serious comeback after Michigan State’s defining run.

The game was part of the Big Ten schedule, with Michigan State continuing its strong start to conference play. The Spartans entered as heavy favorites according to national analytics and covered the pregame spread with ease, though the combined score of 120 points fell well under the projected total.

A crowd of 6,634 at Matthew Knight Arena saw the Spartans control the tempo throughout. Michigan State led 28-26 at halftime before outscoring Oregon 40-26 in the second half to seal the victory.

Michigan State will return to Big Ten action Saturday when it hosts Maryland. Oregon will travel to face Washington on Sunday.
