Anderson Leads Texas Tech to Rout of Baylor

WACO, Texas (Interstat) — A blistering first-half shooting display from beyond the arc propelled Texas Tech to a decisive 92-73 victory over Baylor in a Big 12 Conference men’s basketball game Tuesday night at the Ferrell Center.

The Red Raiders connected on 17 of 27 three-point attempts, a scorching 63 percent rate, to build a commanding 19-point halftime lead and never looked back. The win improved Texas Tech to 15-4 overall, while Baylor fell to 11-7.

The most important part of the game was the opening salvo, as Texas Tech established its dominance from long range immediately and never allowed the Bears to recover. The tone was set in the game’s first three minutes. After winning the opening tip, the Red Raiders’ first three possessions all resulted in three-pointers from Donovan Atwell, two of them assisted by Christian Anderson. That 9-0 burst forced an early Baylor timeout and signaled this would be Texas Tech’s night from the perimeter.

Baylor struggled to find any consistent answer. The Bears managed to close the gap to 15-10 near the 14-minute mark of the first half after a Michael Rataj free throw, but Texas Tech responded with another barrage. Anderson and Atwell continued their hot shooting, and when Tyeree Bryan and JT Toppin joined in, the lead ballooned. A 13-2 run by the Red Raiders, capped by another Anderson three-pointer, pushed the advantage to 28-12 with just over 11 minutes remaining in the half.

Baylor showed brief signs of life late in the half. Trailing 55-31 after a Bryan three-pointer with under four minutes left, the Bears closed the period on a 5-0 run, including a Tounde Yessoufou jumper just before the buzzer, to cut the deficit to 55-36 at intermission. That momentum was short-lived, however, as Texas Tech scored the first seven points of the second half to extinguish any hope of a Baylor comeback. The Bears never got closer than 16 points the rest of the way.

Christian Anderson led all scorers with 26 points for Texas Tech, adding six assists. His backcourt mate, Donovan Atwell, was equally lethal, scoring 21 points, all on seven three-pointers. JT Toppin dominated inside, contributing 22 points on efficient 10-of-15 shooting from the field. LeJuan Watts added 13 points for a balanced Red Raiders attack.

For Baylor, Cameron Carr led the way with 18 points and five assists. Dan Skillings came off the bench to score 12 points, and Isaac Williams added 11. The Bears were hampered by poor free-throw shooting, making only 10 of 20 attempts from the line, and were outclassed from deep, hitting just 7 of 21 three-point tries.

Texas Tech’s offensive efficiency was staggering. The Red Raiders scored 92 points on just 71 possessions, translating to an offensive rating of 129.2. They shot 60 percent from the field overall. Baylor, by contrast, managed a 106.6 offensive rating, scoring 73 points on 68 possessions while shooting 49.1 percent.

The game drew an attendance of 7,349 to the Ferrell Center. Texas Tech, which entered as a 1.5-point favorite according to sportsbooks, covered the spread with ease. The total points of 165 surpassed the pregame over/under line of 158.

The victory extends Texas Tech’s winning streak to three games, following conference wins over Utah and BYU. Baylor has now lost two of its last three Big 12 contests. The Red Raiders will next host Houston on Saturday, while Baylor is set to face Texas Christian at home, also on Saturday.
