Saint Bonaventure Rallies From Halftime Deficit to Defeat Loyola Chicago

KNAPP CREEK, N.Y. (Interstat) — A tale of two halves unfolded at the Reilly Center on Tuesday night, where the Saint Bonaventure Bonnies overcame a 12-point halftime deficit with a dominant second-half performance to defeat the Loyola Chicago Ramblers 84-70 in an Atlantic 10 Conference men’s basketball game.

The Ramblers, who entered the game with just four wins, looked poised for a road upset through the first 20 minutes. They shot efficiently and controlled the pace, taking a 42-30 lead into the locker room. Joshua Ola-Joseph of Loyola Chicago led all scorers at the break with 13 of his team-high 20 points, while Miles Rubin anchored the defense with four first-half blocks.

The second half, however, belonged entirely to the Bonnies and, more specifically, to guard Darryl Simmons. The Detroit native erupted after halftime, scoring 20 of his game-high 26 points to fuel a stunning 54-28 second-half advantage for Saint Bonaventure. The Bonnies opened the period on a 15-4 run to erase the deficit and seize control, a surge from which Loyola Chicago never recovered.

Simmons was the catalyst, but he had ample support. Frank Mitchell, a 6-foot-8 forward from Toronto, provided a powerful inside presence, finishing with 18 points and three assists. Guard Cayden Charles added 16 points, and Dasonte Bowen orchestrated the offense with eight assists. The Bonnies’ defensive intensity skyrocketed after halftime, forcing the Ramblers into rushed shots and turnovers that fueled their transition game.

Loyola Chicago’s offense, so fluid in the first half, stagnated against the renewed Bonnies’ pressure. Ola-Joseph finished with 20 points, and Nicolus Anderson contributed 15, but the Ramblers managed only 28 points in the second half. Rubin was a bright spot throughout, ending with eight points, four assists and four blocks.

The victory improved Saint Bonaventure’s record to 12-7 overall and provided a crucial conference win after dropping three of its last four. The Bonnies surpassed the pregame point spread, having been installed as 11-point favorites. The combined score of 154 points went over the projected total of 147.5.

Loyola Chicago’s season of struggle continued, falling to 5-15. The Ramblers have now lost five consecutive games.

A crowd of 3,209 watched the comeback, which was projected as a likely Saint Bonaventure win with a 74.7% probability according to Interstat’s ELO system. The Bonnies’ ability to flip the game on its head after intermission was the decisive factor, turning a potential upset into a comfortable double-digit victory that aligned with pregame expectations.

Saint Bonaventure will look to build on the momentum when it hosts Saint Louis on Friday. Loyola Chicago returns home to face Duquesne on Saturday.
