Mercyhurst Lakers Dominate Central Connecticut Blue Devils in Northeast Conference Matchup

ERIE, Pa. (Interstat) — In a game defined by a dominant opening salvo and sustained offensive efficiency, the Mercyhurst Lakers seized control early and never relented, defeating the Central Connecticut Blue Devils 79-61 in a men’s NCAA Division I basketball game Monday afternoon at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center.

The most important part of the game was the first half, where Mercyhurst established a decisive and ultimately insurmountable lead. The Lakers raced out to a 14-point halftime advantage, leading 42-28, by executing with precision on offense and applying disruptive pressure on defense. This early surge set the tone for the entire contest, as Central Connecticut spent the remainder of the game attempting, and failing, to mount a significant challenge.

Mercyhurst’s victory was powered by a trio of standout performances and superior shooting. Qadir Martin, a 6-foot-5 junior from Staten Island, New York, delivered a complete game with 14 points, 10 rebounds and four assists, anchoring the Lakers on both ends. He was complemented by the backcourt duo of Jake Lemelman and Bernie Blunt, who each poured in 20 points. Lemelman, a 6-foot-2 guard from Newton, Massachusetts, also dished out six assists, while Blunt, a 5-foot-11 guard from Morgantown, Pennsylvania, added five rebounds.

The statistical disparity told the story of Mercyhurst’s command. The Lakers shot a blistering 55% from the field, connecting on 33 of 60 attempts, and were even more potent from beyond the arc, hitting 9 of 17 three-pointers for a 52.9% clip. They also committed just eight turnovers while forcing 10 from Central Connecticut. The Lakers’ offensive rating of 127.6 points per 100 possessions underscored their clinical performance.

Central Connecticut, conversely, struggled to find any consistent offensive rhythm. The Blue Devils shot just 36.7% from the floor and a frigid 22.7% from three-point range. While they attempted more free throws, making 12 of 15, they could not compensate for their inefficiency from the field. Darin Smith led Central Connecticut with 15 points, and Max Frazier added 12 points and seven rebounds, but the team managed only three assists total, highlighting their stagnant ball movement.

The game began with Mercyhurst immediately imposing its will. After a slow start for both teams, Lemelman ignited the Lakers with a three-pointer less than a minute in. Mercyhurst then used a 9-2 run, capped by a Lemelman jumper off a Central Connecticut turnover, to build an early lead they would not surrender. The Lakers’ lead ballooned to 20 points at 40-20 late in the first half following a Deshaun Jackson layup, and they comfortably maintained a double-digit cushion throughout the second half.

Central Connecticut made several pushes after halftime, closing the gap to 12 points on multiple occasions, but each time Mercyhurst had an answer, often from Blunt or Martin. A three-pointer from Christian Gamble and a Lemelman assist to Bernie Blunt for a layup pushed the lead back to 57-41 midway through the second period, effectively extinguishing the Blue Devils’ hopes.

The loss dropped Central Connecticut to 10-7 on the season, while Mercyhurst improved to 8-11. The game, organized by the Northeast Conference, was witnessed by 567 fans. According to Interstat’s ELO system, Central Connecticut entered as a significant favorite with a 69.4% projected probability to win, making the Lakers’ comprehensive victory a notable upset. The total score of 140 points fell under the pre-game over/under line of 135.5.

Central Connecticut looks to rebound when it hosts Fairleigh Dickinson on Friday. Mercyhurst, riding the momentum of this performance, will travel to face New Haven on the same night. The two teams are scheduled to meet again in a rematch at Central Connecticut on February 26.
