Gauchos Ride Efficient Offense to Defeat Warriors in Big West Matchup

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (Interstat) — Aidan Mahaney scored 17 points and UC Santa Barbara used a dominant first half to build an insurmountable lead, cruising to a 77-62 victory over Hawaii in a Big West Conference men’s basketball game Saturday night at the Thunderdome.

The Gauchos, improving to 11-7 overall and 2-3 in conference play, seized control early with a blistering offensive display, shooting 54.5% from the field in the opening period to take a 40-21 halftime lead. Hawaii, which entered the game with a 13-3 record and leading the Big West, never recovered from the early deficit, seeing its four-game winning streak snapped.

The most critical stretch of the game occurred midway through the first half. With UC Santa Barbara already leading 10-7, the Gauchos unleashed a decisive 12-2 run over a four-minute span. The surge was fueled by stifling defense that forced four Hawaii turnovers and capped by a 3-pointer from Mahaney, a transfer from Saint Mary’s, and a turnaround jumper from Evans Kipruto, pushing the lead to 22-9. Hawaii’s offense, which managed just 21 first-half points on 30% shooting, was consistently disrupted by UC Santa Barbara’s active hands, leading to 13 Warrior turnovers that the Gauchos converted into 12 points by halftime.

UC Santa Barbara’s offensive efficiency was the story, finishing the game at 54.7% shooting from the field while holding Hawaii to 41.5%. The Gauchos also won the battle in the paint, outscoring Hawaii 42-28, and capitalized on their free throws, making 12 of 15.

Mahaney, the Lafayette, California native, added four assists in 34 minutes to lead a balanced Gaucho attack. Hosana Kitenge provided a strong interior presence with 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting, while Miro Little of Finland and Zion Sensley each chipped in 11 points. Colin Smith added 10 points and a key first-half block that helped set the defensive tone.

Hawaii, which fell to 13-4 overall and 3-1 in the Big West, was led by Harry Rouhliadeff and Isaiah Kerr, who each scored 13 points. The Warriors showed more life after halftime, shooting 48% in the second period and cutting the deficit to 13 points on several occasions, but could not string together enough stops to truly threaten the Gauchos. A late 7-0 run by UC Santa Barbara, finished by a Sensley layup with just over five minutes remaining, pushed the lead back to 68-53 and effectively sealed the game.

The Warriors’ backcourt of Kerr and Hunter Erickson, who had seven points and three assists, combined to shoot just 8 of 23 from the field. Center Isaac Johnson added 10 points for Hawaii.

An announced crowd of 2,589 at the Thunderdome saw the Gauchos even their conference record and hand Hawaii its first league loss. According to Interstat’s ELO system, UC Santa Barbara entered the game with a 50.6% probability to win.

Hawaii returns home to host Cal State Bakersfield on Thursday. UC Santa Barbara continues its homestand against Cal Poly, also on Thursday.
