Lamar Tops Nicholls State in Southland Conference Road Win
THIBODAUX, La. (Interstat) — In a game defined by blistering offensive efficiency and a decisive second-half response, the Lamar Cardinals weathered an early storm from Sincere Malone and the Nicholls State Colonels to secure a 90-80 victory in a Southland Conference men’s basketball matchup Saturday afternoon at Stopher Gym.
The contest, played before an intimate crowd of 655, saw Lamar improve to 10-8 overall and even its conference record, while Nicholls State fell to 8-10. The outcome defied the pregame analytics, as national statistical models had heavily favored the Colonels with a 68.3% probability to win.
The most critical phase of the game unfolded early in the second half, directly stemming from Nicholls State’s strong closing run before the break. After trailing for much of the first half, the Colonels, fueled by Malone’s playmaking, ended the period on a 7-2 spurt to trim Lamar’s lead to 45-40 at halftime. The momentum carried into the opening seconds of the second half when Zee Hamoda buried a 3-pointer off a Malone assist, slicing the deficit to just two points.
Facing a suddenly energized home team and a raucous environment, the Cardinals could have faltered. Instead, they authored a immediate and emphatic counterpunch. Lamar responded with a 10-3 run over the next three minutes, re-establishing a nine-point cushion. The sequence was emblematic of their night: high-percentage shots, ball movement, and composure. Andrew Holifield hit a floating jumper, King-Njhsanni Wilhite converted a driving layup, and the Cardinal defense tightened, forcing a Nicholls State turnover and a missed three-pointer.
This stretch effectively halted the Colonels’ surge and set the tone for the remainder of the half. While Nicholls State, led by Malone’s all-around brilliance, would keep fighting and close within six points on several occasions, they could never recover the momentum lost during Lamar’s critical second-half opening salvo. Every Colonel push was met with a timely Lamar basket, often from Rob Lee or Holifield, preventing the home crowd from ever fully reigniting.
The Cardinals’ victory was anchored in historically efficient shooting. They finished the game hitting 64.2% from the field (34 of 53) and a scorching 62.5% from 3-point range (10 of 16). Their offensive rating of 131.2 points per 100 possessions underscored a masterclass in shot selection and execution. Lamar also dominated inside, outscoring Nicholls State 40-26 in the paint.
Lee, a guard from Flint, Michigan, led the Cardinals with 20 points, including four 3-pointers, many coming at crucial moments to stifle Nicholls State rallies. Holifield, a 6-foot-10 forward from Beaumont, Texas, added 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting. The Lamar offense was also facilitated by Eian Lowe, who dished out a game-high seven assists in just 17 minutes off the bench.
Nicholls State was carried by the stellar performance of Malone, who filled the stat sheet with 22 points, eight assists, and a block in 38 minutes. He orchestrated the offense and kept the Colonels within striking distance. Jaylen Searles contributed 20 points, and Christian Winborne of Baltimore added 13. The Colonels were efficient in their own right, shooting 48.1% from the floor and 79.2% from the free-throw line, but were ultimately overwhelmed by Lamar’s superior shooting night.
Despite committing 15 turnovers to Nicholls State’s 12 and losing the steals battle 10-8, Lamar’s ability to capitalize on their possessions proved insurmountable. The Cardinals also won the battle in transition, outscoring the Colonels 19-15 on fast breaks.
The game’s total of 170 points sailed over the sportsbook over/under line of 139.5, a testament to the offensive firepower on display.
Lamar will look to build on this significant road win when they travel to face New Orleans on Monday. Nicholls State aims to rebound at home against Stephen F. Austin, also on Monday.
