Prairie View at Jackson State

JACKSON, Miss. (Interstat) — A clash of contrasting SWAC momentum arrives at the Lee Williams Athletic Center on Saturday as the Prairie View A&M Panthers visit the Jackson State Tigers.

Prairie View (8-9, 3-1 SWAC) enters on a three-game conference win streak, most recently defeating Arkansas-Pine Bluff 73-61 on Monday. The Panthers have found rhythm in league play after a challenging non-conference slate.

Jackson State (3-13, 2-1), however, presents a potent threat despite its record, having won two of its last three. The Tigers’ offense runs through dynamic guard Daeshun Ruffin, who is in the midst of a sensational scoring burst. Ruffin averaged 35.3 points over his last three games, including a 39-point, 10-assist performance in Monday’s 100-91 loss at Alabama A&M.

The Panthers counter with their own steady leader in guard Cory Wells. He averaged 17.8 points over his last four contests, providing consistent scoring and playmaking. In the win over UAPB, Wells logged 40 minutes with 21 points and five assists.

While Prairie View seeks to solidify its standing near the top of the early conference table, Jackson State aims to leverage its home court and Ruffin’s explosive play to build a winning streak. The Tigers’ defense, allowing 100 points in their last outing, will be tested by a balanced Panthers attack that saw three players score 14 or more points on Monday.

The matchup pits Prairie View’s recent winning consistency against Jackson State’s high-voltage, star-driven performances. Containing Ruffin will be the primary defensive focus for the visiting Panthers, while the Tigers must find answers beyond their standout guard to improve their season trajectory.

Tipoff is set for Saturday, Jan. 17, in Jackson.
