Georgia State at Louisiana-Monroe

Struggling Sun Belt Teams Seek Momentum in Monroe Matchup

MONROE, La. (Interstat) — Two men’s basketball teams looking to halt extended slides will meet Saturday when Georgia State visits Louisiana-Monroe in a Sun Belt Conference contest at Fant-Ewing Coliseum.

The Panthers (6-12, 3-2 Sun Belt) and Warhawks (3-15, 0-5) enter the 2 p.m. EST tipoff on contrasting notes. Georgia State snapped a three-game losing streak with an 81-73 home victory over Marshall last Saturday. Louisiana-Monroe, meanwhile, has lost six consecutive games, most recently a 70-60 defeat at Southern Miss.

The matchup features two of the league’s top individual scorers in a battle of teams with defensive struggles. Georgia State is led by guard Jelani Hamilton, who is averaging 20.1 points per game over his last seven contests. He scored 23 points in the win over Marshall. For the Warhawks, guard Krystian Lewis has been a consistent bright spot, posting a double-double of 20 points and 10 rebounds in the loss to Southern Miss and averaging 21.0 points over his last six games.

Despite their poor overall records, the Panthers have shown recent signs of life in conference play, winning three of their last five. Their offense has found a rhythm, scoring 80 or more points in three of those games. Louisiana-Monroe has struggled to find consistent stops, allowing an average of 82.8 points per game during its six-game skid.

Georgia State’s recent success has been fueled by Hamilton and supporting contributions. In the win over Marshall, Jakai Newton added 13 points and seven rebounds, while Christian Beam had 11 points and eight boards.

Louisiana-Monroe will need more than just Lewis’s production to break its streak. Renars Sondors (12 points, nine rebounds against Southern Miss) and Alex Molofeev have provided intermittent help, but the Warhawks have been plagued by defensive lapses and scoring droughts.

History in the series favors Georgia State, which has won the last four meetings. The Panthers won both matchups last season by an average of 17 points.

Saturday’s game represents a critical opportunity for both squads. Georgia State aims to build its first winning streak in conference play and climb the Sun Belt standings. For Louisiana-Monroe, it is a chance to secure a desperately needed first league victory and build confidence before a difficult two-game road trip next week.
