Smith’s 34 Points Lead Central Connecticut Past Saint Francis (PA)

LORETTO, Pa. (Interstat) — In a game defined by blistering offensive efficiency and a career-defining performance, Darin Smith scored 34 points to lead Central Connecticut to a 98-90 victory over Saint Francis (Pa.) in a Northeast Conference men’s basketball matchup on Saturday at DeGol Arena.

The contest, witnessed by 768 fans, was a stark contrast in styles. The Blue Devils (10-6, 3-0 NEC) won with surgical precision, shooting 60% from the field and 58% from three-point range. The Red Flash (4-14, 2-1), despite hauling in 15 offensive rebounds and attempting 17 more field goals, could not keep pace with Central Connecticut’s scorching shooting.

Smith, a 6-foot-7 junior from Springfield, Massachusetts, was the catalyst. He played 36 minutes, connecting on 10 of 15 shots from the field, including 4 of 6 from beyond the arc, and made 10 of 12 free throws. His performance continued a dominant stretch, following games of 24, 22 and 15 points in his last three outings.

The most critical sequence of the game unfolded late in the first half, turning a tight contest into a lead the Blue Devils would never relinquish. After Saint Francis’ Zion Russell hit a three-pointer to pull the Red Flash within 43-42 with 21 seconds left before halftime, Central Connecticut’s Jay Rodgers answered with a deep three of his own at the buzzer. That shot sent the Blue Devils into the locker room with a 47-43 lead and critical momentum.

Central Connecticut then opened the second half on a 7-3 run, capped by a Smith-assisted layup from Max Frazier, to push the advantage to 54-46. The Red Flash would draw within four points on several occasions but could never get a stop when they needed it most. Every Saint Francis push was met with a clinical Central Connecticut response, often from Smith or Rodgers.

Rodgers, a 6-3 guard from Pickerington, Ohio, orchestrated the offense masterfully, finishing with a double-double of 13 points and 13 assists. His facilitation was key to the Blue Devils’ 139.7 offensive rating, as they scored 98 points on just 70 possessions.

Saint Francis was led by Ahmad Harrison’s 17 points and seven assists. Gestin Liberis added 14 points and nine rebounds, exploiting Central Connecticut’s weakness on the glass. The Red Flash scored 12 second-chance points and 12 points off turnovers but were ultimately undone by their own 31-of-67 (46.3%) shooting and the inability to contain the Blue Devils’ backcourt.

Melo Sanchez contributed 18 points for Central Connecticut, while Frazier added 14. For Saint Francis, Skylar Wicks, Zion Russell and Victor Payne each scored 14 points.

The game total of 188 points shattered the over/under line of 144.5, a testament to the offensive onslaught. Central Connecticut’s win probability was pegged at 72.5% by Interstat’s ELO system entering the contest.

The victory keeps Central Connecticut unbeaten in conference play. The Blue Devils travel to face Mercyhurst on Monday. Saint Francis (Pa.) looks to rebound at home against Stonehill, also on Monday.
