Chattanooga at Western Carolina
CULLOWHEE, N.C. (Interstat) — Two Southern Conference men’s basketball teams seeking momentum will meet Saturday when the Chattanooga Mocs visit the Western Carolina Catamounts at Ramsey Center.
Chattanooga (8-10, 2-3 SoCon) enters on the heels of a 76-67 road win at Wofford on Wednesday. Western Carolina (6-10, 2-3) is also coming off a conference victory, having defeated East Tennessee State 72-68 at home the same night. Both teams sit in the middle of the league standings, making this a pivotal early conference matchup.
The game will feature a duel between two of the league’s top scorers. Chattanooga guard Jordan Frison is averaging 17.4 points per game in conference play, coming off a 19-point, 5-assist performance against Wofford. He has scored 16 or more points in four of his last six outings.
Western Carolina will counter with guard Cord Stansberry, who is averaging 18.3 points in SoCon action. He scored 20 points in the win over ETSU and has topped 20 points in three of his last five games.
Chattanooga’s recent success has been fueled by improved offense, averaging 80.3 points in its last three contests. Alongside Frison, forward Tate Darner (16 points vs. Wofford) and guard Billy Smith (13 points) have provided key support.
Western Carolina has shown resilience, with two of its conference wins coming in overtime, including an 80-77 victory at Furman on Jan. 3. The Catamounts will need to contain Frison and improve perimeter defense after allowing Samford to shoot 50% from the field in an 82-77 loss last week.
The Mocs hold a 58-30 advantage in the all-time series, but the teams split last season’s meetings, each winning on their home floor. Saturday’s winner will gain a valuable conference victory and move above .500 in SoCon play.
The game is scheduled for a 4:30 p.m. EST tip-off. It will be the only regular-season meeting between the schools this season, with the rematch set for Feb. 14 in Chattanooga.
