Citadel at Virginia Military Institute
LEXINGTON, Va. (Interstat) — Two Southern Conference men’s basketball teams seeking momentum will meet Saturday when The Citadel Bulldogs visit the Virginia Military Institute Keydets at Cameron Hall.
Both teams enter the matchup on losing streaks. The Citadel (4-14) fell 69-66 in overtime at UNC Greensboro on Thursday. VMI (6-12) dropped its third straight, 77-67 to Mercer on the same night.
The game features a pair of key guards. Citadel’s Carter Kingsbury is coming off a 43-minute performance where he scored 15 points and dished six assists against UNCG. Over his last five games, Kingsbury is averaging 13.4 points and 3.8 assists.
VMI will counter with Linus Holmstrom, who led the Keydets with 18 points in the loss to Mercer. Holmstrom has been a consistent scorer, reaching double figures in four of his last six contests.
Despite their records, both teams have shown recent flashes. The Bulldogs earned a 79-77 overtime win over Western Carolina on Jan. 10, powered by Kingsbury’s 22 points. VMI’s last victory was a 79-71 home win over Chattanooga on Jan. 3, where Holmstrom contributed 12 points.
Defensive struggles have plagued both squads. The Citadel allows an average of 78.2 points per game, while VMI surrenders 77.8. The team that can string together stops will likely gain the upper hand in this conference rivalry.
This marks the first of two regular-season meetings between the military institutes. They will play again at The Citadel on Jan. 29.
Tipoff is set for Saturday, Jan. 17, 2026, in Lexington.
