Longwood at Radford
FAIRLAWN, Va. (Interstat) — A pivotal Big South Conference clash featuring two teams seeking consistency will unfold Saturday when the Longwood Lancers visit the Radford Highlanders at the D.N. Dedmon Center.
Both teams enter the 4 p.m. matchup with identical 10-9 overall records, adding stakes to the league standings. Longwood (1-2 Big South) arrives after a week-long break following a 77-70 home win over Presbyterian on Jan. 10. Radford (2-1) carries momentum from an 89-80 road victory at Gardner-Webb on Wednesday.
The game features a compelling contrast in recent standout performers. Longwood will lean on forward Elijah Tucker, who is coming off a dominant double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds against Presbyterian. Over his last six games, Tucker is averaging 11.5 points and 6.8 rebounds, providing a critical interior presence for the Lancers.
Radford counters with the hot hand of guard Del Jones, who has erupted for two 27-point performances in his last three outings, including in the win at Gardner-Webb. Jones is averaging 18.3 points per game over his last six contests, serving as the Highlanders’ primary offensive catalyst.
Longwood’s conference play has been marked by road struggles, with losses at UNC Asheville and High Point preceding the home win over Presbyterian. Radford has shown a potent offense at home, averaging 87.5 points in its last two games at the Dedmon Center, but was handled 91-72 by UNC Asheville there on Jan. 10.
The Lancers will aim to break their road skid behind Tucker and guard Jacoi Hutchinson, who dished five assists in the last outing. The Highlanders will look for Jones to continue his scoring burst while seeking more defensive stability after allowing 91 points in their lone conference home game.
Saturday’s result will provide a key early-season benchmark for both teams’ aspirations in the tightly contested Big South.
