Arizona Outlasts Rival Arizona State to Stay Undefeated
TUCSON, Ariz. (Interstat) — The Arizona Wildcats, the nation’s last remaining undefeated team in men’s Division I basketball, faced their stiffest test of the season Wednesday night but used a dominant second-half surge to pull away from rival Arizona State for an 89-82 victory at a raucous McKale Center.
In a game that defied the pregame projections of a comfortable Wildcats rout, the Sun Devils battled fiercely, holding a narrow 39-38 lead at halftime. The Wildcats, now 17-0 overall and 3-0 in Big 12 play, finally seized control with a 51-point second-half explosion, showcasing the offensive efficiency and defensive resilience that has defined their perfect start.
The most critical juncture of the contest came early in the second half. With Arizona State leading 43-42, Arizona unleashed a decisive 15-2 run over a four-minute span to establish a double-digit advantage it would never relinquish. The surge was fueled by relentless interior play and transition defense. Koa Peat ignited the run with a tip-in, and after a Maurice Odum three-pointer for the Sun Devils, the Wildcats scored 10 unanswered points. Jaden Bradley connected on consecutive jumpers, Ivan Kharchenkov hit a free throw, and Peat capped the run with a driving layup and a free throw, pushing Arizona’s lead to 57-45.
Arizona State, which fell to 10-7 and 1-2 in the conference, refused to fold. The Sun Devils trimmed the deficit to 66-61 on another Odum three-pointer with 11:09 remaining, but could draw no closer. Each time the visitors threatened, Arizona answered, often at the free-throw line or with a key defensive stop. The Wildcats sealed the game by making 21 of 26 free throws, including several in the final minutes, while Arizona State managed only 7 of 11 from the stripe.
The Wildcats’ victory was anchored by overwhelming advantages in key areas. They outscored Arizona State 46-22 in the paint and 17-7 on fast breaks, exploiting their athleticism and ball movement. Arizona also posted a superior offensive rating of 124.7 on 71 possessions, compared to Arizona State’s 112.0 on 73 trips, underscoring a more efficient scoring attack despite committing one more turnover.
Tobe Awaka was the game’s standout performer, leading all scorers with 25 points in just 24 minutes off the bench for Arizona. The 6-foot-8 forward from Hyde Park, New York, was a model of efficiency, consistently finishing through contact and drawing fouls. His performance continued a strong stretch of play, following an 18-point, 12-rebound outing at Utah on Jan. 3.
He was complemented superbly by freshman Koa Peat, who delivered 24 points, three assists and two blocks in 34 minutes. The local product from Chandler provided crucial scoring throughout, particularly during the game-breaking second-half run. Ivan Kharchenkov added 15 points, and Jaden Bradley chipped in 12 points and four assists.
Arizona State was led by the dynamic backcourt duo of Maurice Odum and Massamba Diop. Odum, a guard from the Bronx, scored 23 points and dished out seven assists, while the 7-foot-1 Diop from Senegal contributed 16 points. Noah Meeusen added 12 points, and Andrija Grbovic scored 10.
The Sun Devils, who shot a respectable 47.8% from the field and 44% from three-point range, simply could not match Arizona’s firepower or contain its interior attack. The Wildcats shot 54.2% from the floor and used their 10 offensive rebounds to create second-chance opportunities.
A crowd of 14,688 watched as Arizona preserved its perfect record, overcoming a spirited challenge from its in-state rival. The Wildcats, who were installed as 21.5-point favorites, saw the total score of 171 surpass the over/under line of 163.5. According to Interstat’s ELO system, Arizona entered with a 97% probability to win.
Arizona will look to extend its streak Saturday on the road against UCF. Arizona State, meanwhile, faces a quick turnaround with a daunting trip to Houston on Sunday. The two rivals will meet again in Tempe on Jan. 31.
