Saint Louis Dominates Fordham in Atlantic 10 Matchup
ST. LOUIS (Interstat) — The Saint Louis Billikens, one of the nation’s hottest teams, used a dominant first-half offensive display to overwhelm the Fordham Rams 78-56 in an Atlantic 10 Conference men’s basketball game Wednesday night at Chaifetz Arena.
A crowd of 6,620 watched the Billikens improve to 16-1 overall and 3-0 in the A-10, while Fordham fell to 10-8 and 1-2.
The most important part of the game was a decisive 21-2 run by Saint Louis midway through the first half that transformed a competitive contest into a commanding lead from which Fordham never recovered. The Rams had pulled within 11-8 on a Rikus Schulte jumper with 13:29 left before halftime. What followed was a clinical demonstration of Saint Louis’ offensive firepower and defensive pressure.
The surge began with a Robbie Avila 3-pointer, assisted by Amari McCottry. After a Fordham miss, Kellen Thames, a hometown product from St. Louis, scored on a tip-in. Fordham’s DeJour Reaves answered with a pull-up jumper, but Avila immediately drained another 3-pointer. A Louis Lesmond turnover led to a Thames 3-pointer from Quentin Jones, capping a run of 11 unanswered points in just over a minute of game time to make it 22-10.
Fordham coach Keith Urgo called a timeout, but the onslaught continued. The Billikens forced another turnover, leading to an Akira Jacobs steal and layup for the Rams, but Saint Louis responded with five more points. By the time the dust settled on the run, which featured contributions from five different Billikens, Saint Louis held a 32-12 lead with 9:31 remaining in the half. The Rams went more than four minutes without a field goal during the stretch.
Saint Louis maintained its offensive efficiency for the remainder of the half, shooting 51.5% from the field and 8 of 17 from 3-point range before the break. They led 44-30 at halftime, a margin built largely on that explosive run.
The second half offered no path back for Fordham. The Rams never cut the deficit below 14 points, and Saint Louis led by as many as 24. The Billikens’ offensive rating of 128.6 points per 100 possessions underscored a night of high-percentage basketball, as they shot 50.9% from the field overall and 40% from beyond the arc.
Fordham, conversely, struggled mightily offensively. The Rams shot 31.3% from the field and 23.1% from 3-point range, managing an offensive rating of just 87.3. Their four total assists highlighted a stagnant offensive effort against a disciplined Saint Louis defense.
Reaves, a guard from Syracuse, New York, led all scorers with 18 points for Fordham in 34 minutes. Jacobs, from Yokohama, Japan, added nine points.
The Billikens showcased their depth and balance. Jones, a guard from Chicago, led Saint Louis with 13 points, three assists and two blocks. Thames provided a major spark off the bench with 16 points on efficient shooting in just 18 minutes. McCottry of Milwaukee had 12 points, three assists and a block, while Brady Dunlap of Studio City, California, chipped in 10 points. Avila, the focal point of the offense from Oak Forest, Illinois, orchestrated the attack with nine points and a game-high five assists.
Saint Louis also dominated in transition, outscoring Fordham 15-5 in fastbreak points, and capitalized on second chances despite being out-rebounded 12-7 on the offensive glass by the Rams.
The victory extended Saint Louis’ winning streak and solidified its position atop the A-10. Fordham, coming off a road win at Saint Bonaventure, saw its momentum halted decisively.
Saint Louis next hosts Richmond on Saturday. Fordham returns home to face Duquesne, also on Saturday.
According to Interstat’s ELO system, Saint Louis had a 94.5% probability to win. The Billikens covered the pregame spread of -19.5 points. The total score of 134 points fell under the over/under line of 148.
