Iowa State at Kansas

Preview: Iowa State Visits Kansas in Key Big 12 Clash

LAWRENCE, Kan. (Interstat) — The nation’s last remaining undefeated team faces one of its most daunting tests Tuesday night as the top-ranked Iowa State Cyclones visit the Kansas Jayhawks at Allen Fieldhouse.

Iowa State (16-0, 3-0 Big 12) brings a perfect record into the Phog, a venue where victories are historically scarce for visitors. The Cyclones are coming off an 83-71 home win over Oklahoma State on Saturday, their third conference victory by double digits.

Kansas (11-5, 1-2), uncharacteristically below .500 in league play, is desperate to avoid a third consecutive Big 12 loss after falling 86-75 at West Virginia. The Jayhawks’ conference struggles highlight the challenge of navigating the deep Big 12, but a home upset of the team would instantly reset their season.

The matchup features two of the league’s premier talents. Iowa State is led by versatile guard Joshua Jefferson, who is averaging 18.0 points and 5.6 assists over his last five games. He posted 19 points and five assists in the win over Oklahoma State.

Kansas counters with high-scoring guard Darryn Peterson. He poured in 32 points in a 104-100 overtime win over TCU on Jan. 6 and followed with 23 in the loss at West Virginia. His offensive explosiveness will be critical for the Jayhawks.

Iowa State’s impressive start includes nonconference wins over Purdue and Creighton, and its defense has held 10 opponents under 65 points. Kansas owns quality wins over Tennessee and NC State but has shown inconsistency, including a home overtime escape against TCU.

History adds another layer. Allen Fieldhouse has long been a house of horrors for opponents, and Kansas will aim to protect its home court and hand the Cyclones their first blemish. For Iowa State, a win would solidify its ranking and prove its contender status on the road in one of college basketball’s most hostile environments.

Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. CST Tuesday in a game televised on ESPN.
