West Virginia at Houston
Preview: Houston Hosts West Virginia in Big 12 Clash
HOUSTON (Interstat) — The sixth-ranked Houston Cougars, boasting one of the nation’s top records, will put their stifling defense and home-court advantage on the line Tuesday night when they host the West Virginia Mountaineers in a Big 12 Conference men’s basketball matchup at Hofheinz Pavilion.
Houston (15-1, 3-0 Big 12) has won nine consecutive games since its only loss to then-Tennessee on Nov. 25. The Cougars are coming off a dominant 77-55 road victory at Baylor, a performance emblematic of their season. They lead the nation in scoring defense, allowing just 53.1 points per game.
West Virginia (11-5, 2-1) arrives with momentum after an 86-75 home win over Kansas last Saturday. The Mountaineers have shown resilience in conference play, including a 62-60 victory over Cincinnati, but have struggled on the road, including an 80-59 loss at Iowa State on Jan. 2.
A key matchup will feature two of the league’s standout performers. West Virginia guard Honor Huff enters on a scoring tear, averaging 21.5 points over his last two games, including a 23-point effort against Kansas. He will face constant pressure from Houston’s perimeter defense.
For the Cougars, forward Joseph Tugler provides a versatile interior presence. He is coming off a 12-point, 11-rebound double-double against Baylor and has been a consistent force on both ends of the floor. Houston’s balanced attack also features guard Emanuel Sharp, who scored 17 points in the win at Baylor.
Houston has won all three meetings since both schools joined the Big 12 last season. The Cougars’ relentless defensive pressure, which forces over 17 turnovers per game, will test a West Virginia team that has committed 15 turnovers per contest in league play.
The game is scheduled for an 8 p.m. EST tipoff on Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2026. Houston will look to maintain its hold on first place in the conference, while West Virginia aims to secure a signature road win to bolster its postseason resume.
