Stephen F. Austin Routs Houston Christian Behind Efficient Offense

NACOGDOCHES, Texas (Interstat) — The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks, showcasing the depth and defensive intensity that has defined their strong season, overwhelmed the Houston Christian Huskies from the opening tip and cruised to an 85-67 victory in a men’s NCAA Division I basketball game Saturday night at William R. Johnson Coliseum.

A crowd of 1,624 watched the Lumberjacks improve to 13-3 overall, while the Huskies fell to 5-11.

The most important part of the game was its inception. Stephen F. Austin established immediate and total control, setting a dominant tone that Houston Christian never managed to disrupt. The Lumberjacks opened the contest with a devastating 12-0 run, fueled by aggressive defense that forced three quick Huskies turnovers. The sequence was punctuated by a 3-pointer from Lateef Patrick just 43 seconds into the game, an assist from Chrishawn Christmas, who was instrumental in the early onslaught.

Houston Christian, visibly rattled, did not score until nearly four minutes had elapsed and was forced to burn two full timeouts before the first media break in a futile attempt to stem the tide. The Huskies’ early offense was crippled by turnovers and rushed shots, while Stephen F. Austin efficiently converted those mistakes into points, building a lead that would never dip below double digits for the remainder of the evening.

Stephen F. Austin led 43-28 at halftime, having shot efficiently and shared the ball, while their defense held Houston Christian to a scattered offensive effort. The second half offered no respite for the visitors. The Lumberjacks’ lead ballooned to as many as 23 points, as they consistently answered any modest Huskies push with a run of their own, often powered by their bench.

Keon Thompson led all scorers with 16 points for Stephen F. Austin, providing steady backcourt play. He was one of five Lumberjacks to score in double figures, highlighting the team’s balanced attack. Lateef Patrick added 14 points, while Narit Chotikavanic came off the bench to chip in 14 points, including four 3-pointers that helped extinguish any notion of a Houston Christian rally. Gediminas Alisas contributed 10 points and active interior play, and Kam Burton finished with nine points and disruptive defense.

For Houston Christian, Demari Williams led the way with 15 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, and added a block. Mambourou Mara provided a spark off the bench with 12 points, and D’Aundre Samuels finished with 11 points and five assists. The Huskies, however, were plagued by the early turnovers and could not find consistent scoring beyond those three performers.

Stephen F. Austin’s defensive pressure was the story, generating 11 steals and converting Houston Christian’s 15 turnovers into 21 points. The Lumberjacks also dominated in the paint, outscoring the Huskies 44-26, and enjoyed a 19-8 advantage in fast-break points.

The victory keeps Stephen F. Austin near the top of the conference standings as they continue a promising season. Houston Christian, meanwhile, continues to search for consistency as it navigates a difficult schedule.

According to Interstat’s ELO system, Stephen F. Austin was projected with a 94.40 percent probability to win, a forecast borne out by their comprehensive performance from start to finish.
