Eastern Illinois Holds Off Tennessee State Rally in OVC Matchup
CHARLESTON, Ill. (Interstat) — In a game defined by a dominant opening act and a frantic, defensive-minded finish, the Eastern Illinois Panthers erased a nine-point halftime deficit to edge the Tennessee State Tigers 74-70 in an Ohio Valley Conference men’s basketball game Saturday at Lantz Arena.
The victory, secured before a crowd of 1,137, improved Eastern Illinois to 6-10 overall. Tennessee State, which had won three straight conference games, fell to 10-6.
The Panthers surged from the opening tip, building a 42-33 halftime lead behind a blistering offensive display. They shot 57% from the field in the first half, including 5 of 9 from three-point range, and assisted on 10 of their 16 made baskets. Guard Zion Fruster of Douglasville, Georgia, orchestrated the early attack, scoring 11 of his 19 points before the break, while forward Kooper Jacobi of Sellersburg, Indiana, added 10 of his 14. The Panthers’ ball movement and shot-making created a cushion that seemed it might grow insurmountable.
Tennessee State, however, recalibrated at halftime. The Tigers tightened their defense dramatically, holding Eastern Illinois to 32% shooting in the second half. They chipped away at the lead with methodical offense, primarily through guard Khalil London of Wyandanch, New York, who scored 17 of his game-high 23 points after intermission. A driving layup by London with just over two minutes remaining finally drew the Tigers even at 70-70, capping a 37-28 second-half run.
The most important part of the game unfolded in the final 90 seconds. After London’s tying basket, Eastern Illinois’s Meechie White of Louisville, Kentucky, who finished with seven points and seven assists, found Fruster for a layup to put the Panthers back ahead 72-70 with 58 seconds left. On the ensuing possession, Tennessee State’s Dante Harris of Washington, D.C., committed a crucial turnover, which Jacobi stole with 46 seconds on the clock.
Following a missed jump shot by Fruster, Eastern Illinois’s Nazareth Fisher secured a vital offensive rebound. The Panthers then worked the clock before Fruster was fouled with 14 seconds remaining. He calmly sank both free throws to extend the lead to 74-70. Tennessee State’s final attempt, a three-pointer by London, missed, sealing the Panthers’ comeback victory.
While London’s 23 points led all scorers, Tennessee State’s Travis Harper of Columbus, Georgia, provided a strong inside presence with 18 points. For Eastern Illinois, Fruster’s 19 points and five assists paced the Panthers, supported by Jacobi’s 14 points and four assists, and 12 points off the bench from Andre Washington of Staten Island, New York.
Statistically, Eastern Illinois’s efficiency proved decisive. The Panthers scored 74 points on 70 possessions for an offensive rating of 105.4, while Tennessee State managed 70 points on 73 possessions for a 95.3 rating. Eastern Illinois also won the battle from beyond the arc, making 9 of 20 three-point attempts compared to Tennessee State’s 6 of 23.
The game was a reversal of pregame expectations, as statistical models gave Tennessee State nearly a 65% chance to win, and the Tigers entered as 4.5-point favorites. The combined score of 144 points fell under the betting over/under line of 142.5.
Eastern Illinois looks to build on the win when it hosts Western Illinois on Tuesday. Tennessee State aims to rebound when it returns home to face Morehead State on Thursday.
