Georgia Southern at South Alabama
MOBILE, Ala. (Interstat) — A pivotal early Sun Belt Conference clash is set for Saturday at the Mitchell Center as the South Alabama Jaguars host the Georgia Southern Eagles.
Both teams enter with strong overall records, but are coming off contrasting performances in their league openers last Saturday. Georgia Southern (12-5) earned a hard-fought 93-86 road victory at Old Dominion, while South Alabama (11-5) was held to a season-low in points in a 59-49 loss at Troy.
The Eagles have won five straight, showcasing a potent offense. A key catalyst has been guard Alden Applewhite, who is averaging 14.2 points over his last five games. He scored 17 in the win at Old Dominion, following a 14-point, 11-rebound double-double in an overtime win at Coastal Carolina on Jan. 1.
The Jaguars will counter with their own dynamic guard in Chaze Harris. He leads the team in scoring and is coming off an 18-point effort in the loss to Troy. Harris has been a volume scorer, erupting for 38 points and eight assists in a double-overtime win at Louisiana-Monroe on Dec. 17.
Georgia Southern’s winning streak has featured high-scoring affairs, with the team averaging 88.8 points during the five-game run. Their defense, however, allowed 86 points to Old Dominion. South Alabama’s defense, which had been stout prior to the Troy game, will be tested. The Jaguars’ offense seeks to rebound from a 49-point outing where they shot just 32.7% from the field.
This matchup features two of the Sun Belt’s top guards in Applewhite and Harris, and could hinge on which team better imposes its style. The Eagles will look to push the tempo, while the Jaguars aim to control the pace at home.
The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. CST tipoff on Saturday, Jan. 10, 2026.
