Preview: Houston Cougars at Baylor Bears
WACO, Texas (Interstat) — The surging Houston Cougars, boasting one of the nation’s top records, face a Baylor Bears squad seeking a resume-reviving victory in a key Big 12 Conference matchup Saturday at the Ferrell Center.
Houston (14-1, 2-0 Big 12) arrives on a nine-game winning streak, most recently holding off Texas Tech 69-61 on Tuesday. The Cougars’ identity remains rooted in a relentless defense that ranks among the country’s best, but their offense flows through guard Kingston Flemings. The standout has scored at least 15 points in seven straight games, averaging 20.2 points and 5.0 assists over his last five outings.
Baylor (10-4, 0-2) looks to avoid an 0-3 start in league play after consecutive losses to TCU and Iowa State. The Bears’ high-powered offense, which eclipsed 110 points three times in nonconference play, has been stifled in the Big 12, averaging just 61.5 points in those two defeats. They will lean on guard Cameron Carr, who has been a consistent scorer with 17 or more points in five consecutive games.
The Bears’ challenging early conference slate doesn’t get easier against a Houston team whose only loss came against then-Tennessee in November. The Cougars have since won 11 straight, including decisive road victories at Cincinnati and Arkansas.
Saturday’s contest pits Houston’s stifling defense against a Baylor offense in need of a breakout performance. The Cougars have held 12 opponents under 70 points this season. Baylor’s defense, however, has struggled of late, allowing an average of 77 points in its four losses.
The game marks a significant early test for both teams in the deep Big 12. Houston aims to solidify its status as a conference frontrunner, while Baylor desperately seeks a signature win to stabilize its season before a daunting stretch that includes games at Kansas and against Texas Tech next week.
Tipoff is set for Saturday afternoon. Houston’s next game is at home against West Virginia on Jan. 13. Baylor travels to face Oklahoma State on the same date.
