West Virginia Mountaineers Outlast Kansas Jayhawks in High-Scoring Big 12 Affair

STAR CITY, W.Va. (Interstat) — In a pivotal Big 12 Conference clash that saw both teams enter with identical records, the West Virginia Mountaineers used a dominant second-half performance and a barrage of three-pointers to defeat the Kansas Jayhawks 86-75 on Saturday afternoon at a raucous WVU Coliseum.

The game, played before a crowd of 13,743, was a tale of two halves. Kansas, the pregame favorite, controlled the opening period with efficient offense and active defense, taking a 43-39 lead into the locker room. Sophomore guard Darryn Peterson, a Canton, Ohio, native, led the charge with 15 of his team-high 23 points before the break. The Jayhawks forced eight first-half turnovers, converting them into 13 points, and held a distinct 19-1 advantage in fastbreak points.

However, the Mountaineers emerged from halftime a transformed team. They immediately seized momentum with a 15-4 run over the first six minutes of the second half, flipping a four-point deficit into a seven-point lead they would never relinquish. The catalyst was an explosive offensive display, particularly from beyond the arc. West Virginia shot 11 for 26 from three-point range for the game, with several critical makes coming during the decisive second-half surge.

The most important stretch of the game began with just over nine minutes remaining and West Virginia leading 61-60. Over the next three minutes, the Mountaineers delivered a knockout blow. It started with a three-pointer from Jasper Floyd of Tampa, Florida, assisted by Brenen Lorient. After a Kansas miss, Lorient found Honor Huff for another three. Following a Jayhawks turnover, Huff struck again from deep, this time off another Lorient assist, capping a 9-0 run that extended the lead to 70-60 with 6:41 to play. Kansas, which had struggled from deep all afternoon at 8 for 27, could not answer with a similar flurry.

Huff, a dynamic guard from Brooklyn, New York, matched Peterson’s game-high 23 points, with 14 coming in the second half. His back-to-back threes during the critical run were demoralizing for the Jayhawks. Lorient, a 6-foot-9 forward from Ocala, Florida, was the orchestrator, finishing with 18 points and a game-high six assists, consistently finding shooters against a Kansas defense that prioritized protecting the paint.

While Kansas won several statistical battles—they had more assists (7-2), more steals (7-2), more blocks (5-3), fewer turnovers (6-8), and more fastbreak points (19-1)—West Virginia’s superior shooting efficiency proved decisive. The Mountaineers shot 48.2% from the field compared to Kansas’s 42.6%, and their 21-of-29 performance from the free-throw line, including several clutch makes in the final minutes, kept the Jayhawks at bay.

Kansas made a final push, cutting the lead to 77-75 on a three-pointer by Peterson with 2:01 remaining. But West Virginia closed the game on a 9-0 run, all from the free-throw line, as the Jayhawks were forced to foul. Huff and Treysen Eaglestaff of Bismarck, North Dakota, who added 12 points, were perfect from the stripe in the closing moments to seal the victory.

For Kansas, Peterson’s 23 points led the way, supported by 18 points from Tre White of Dallas and 11 from Melvin Council of Rochester, New York. Flory Bidunga of Kinshasa, Congo, anchored the defense with four blocks. West Virginia’s interior was bolstered by Harlan Obioha of Hoxie, Kansas, who scored 11 points and grabbed several key offensive rebounds.

The loss drops Kansas to 11-5 overall and 1-2 in the Big 12, following a dramatic overtime win over TCU earlier in the week. West Virginia also moves to 11-5 but improves to 2-1 in conference play, gaining a significant resume-building victory. According to Interstat’s ELO system, Kansas had been projected with a 62.5% chance to win and was installed as a 4.5-point favorite. The total score of 161 far exceeded the over/under line of 133.5.

Kansas returns home to face Iowa State on Tuesday, while West Virginia travels to face Houston, also on Tuesday.
