Lehigh Holds Off Holy Cross for Patriot League Win
FOUNTAIN HILL, Pa. (Interstat) — In a Patriot League matchup defined by offensive droughts and a decisive second-half surge, the Lehigh Mountain Hawks secured a 66-58 victory over the Holy Cross Crusaders on Wednesday night at Stabler Arena.
The game, played before an intimate crowd of 473, saw Lehigh improve to 5-11 overall, while Holy Cross fell to 6-10. The outcome was largely dictated by the Mountain Hawks’ superior efficiency and their ability to capitalize on a critical stretch after halftime.
Holy Cross, coming off a narrow home loss to Navy, started brightly. Joe Nugent connected on a 3-pointer for the game’s first basket, and the Crusaders traded early blows with the hosts. The first half was a grinding, low-possession affair characterized by turnovers and missed opportunities for both sides. Holy Cross guard Tyler Boston committed three turnovers in the opening minutes, setting a sloppy tone.
Lehigh’s frontcourt duo of Hank Alvey and Edouard Benoit began to impose their will. Alvey, a 6-foot-9 junior from Mapleton, Illinois, used his size for finishes inside, while Benoit, a 6-8 forward from Montreal, showcased a versatile scoring touch. Despite their efforts, neither team could build a substantial lead. The Crusaders, led by Gabe Warren’s interior work and Declan Ryan’s bench production, stayed within reach. A late layup by Alvey, assisted by Joshua Ingram with just three seconds left in the half, gave Lehigh a 33-30 advantage at the break.
The most important part of the game unfolded early in the second half. With the margin still precarious, Lehigh unleashed a devastating 10-2 run that effectively decided the contest. It began with Alvey converting an offensive rebound into a tip-in. After Warren split free throws for Holy Cross, Benoit took over. The sophomore forward drained consecutive 3-pointers, the second coming off a Jalen Vazquez assist, to push the Lehigh lead to 41-33 and force a Holy Cross timeout just over three minutes into the period.
Holy Cross never recovered from that burst. The Crusaders’ offense, which managed only 91.0 points per 100 possessions for the game, went cold at the worst possible time. They shot 3 of 13 from beyond the arc overall and could not mount a sustained counterattack. Every time Holy Cross showed a flicker of momentum, Lehigh had an answer, usually from Alvey or Benoit.
Alvey finished with a game-high 20 points, adding two blocks and two steals in 33 minutes of work. Benoit was equally instrumental, scoring 22 points, including four 3-pointers, and contributing a block and a steal. Their combined 42 points on efficient shooting provided the consistent offensive foundation Lehigh needed. Nasir Whitlock added 10 points for the Mountain Hawks, who shot 49.1 percent from the field and 40 percent from deep.
Holy Cross was led by Gabe Warren, who scored 15 points. Joe Nugent added 12 points, and DeAndre Williams contributed nine points and three assists. The Crusaders managed to score 34 points in the paint but were ultimately undone by their perimeter shooting and an inability to string together stops during Lehigh’s pivotal run.
Statistically, the game was closer than the final score indicated. Both teams had eight assists and eight steals. Lehigh committed 12 turnovers to Holy Cross’s nine. The Mountain Hawks held a slight edge in fast-break points, 14-8, and a more significant advantage in offensive efficiency, scoring 104.3 points per 100 possessions compared to Holy Cross’s 91.0.
The win provided Lehigh with a positive start to the league schedule after a difficult non-conference slate that included overtime losses to Army and Long Island. For Holy Cross, the search for consistency continues as they alternate wins and losses over their past six games.
Both teams continue Patriot League play on Saturday. Holy Cross travels to face American, while Lehigh visits Colgate. The two teams are scheduled to meet again in Worcester, Massachusetts, on Feb. 7.
