Saint Louis Stifles VCU to Earn Road Victory
RICHMOND, Va. (Interstat) — The Saint Louis Billikens, propelled by a dominant defensive first half and a game-high 18 points from Kellen Thames, withstood a second-half rally to defeat the VCU Rams 71-62 in an Atlantic 10 Conference men’s basketball game Wednesday night at Siegel Center.
The victory improved Saint Louis to 14-1 overall and marked a significant road win in league play. VCU fell to 11-5.
The most critical phase of the contest was its opening stanza, where Saint Louis established a commanding lead that VCU could never fully erase. The Billikens held the Rams to a frigid 18-of-63 shooting performance for the game, including just 6 of 24 from three-point range. That defensive stranglehold was most severe before halftime, as VCU managed only 22 points on 7-of-30 shooting in the first half, trailing by eight at the break.
Saint Louis built its early advantage not with explosive offense but with persistent defense and timely scoring. The Billikens opened the game on a 7-0 run, capped by a Dion Brown 3-pointer, and never relinquished the lead. VCU’s offense was plagued by turnovers and missed opportunities near the rim, often met by the intimidating presence of Saint Louis shot-blockers Paul Otieno and Robbie Avila, who combined for four blocks.
The Rams, fueled by the home crowd of 7,637, emerged from halftime with renewed energy. Terrence Hill, who led VCU with 17 points, and Jadrian Tracey sparked a push that saw the Rams gradually chip away at the deficit. A driving layup by Hill with 10:31 remaining cut the Saint Louis lead to 41-39, applying serious pressure for the first time all night.
Saint Louis, however, had an answer in Thames. The 6-foot-6 guard from St. Louis, Missouri, was instrumental in steadying his team. He scored 12 of his points in the second half, attacking the basket to halt VCU runs. After the Rams pulled within two, Thames converted a layup while being fouled and hit the ensuing free throw. Moments later, his driving score at the 9:25 mark pushed the lead back to six and stemmed the VCU tide.
VCU continued to battle, closing to within 53-50 on a Terrence Hill 3-pointer with 6:38 to play. But the Billikens executed down the stretch. A dunk by Paul Otieno, who finished with 8 points and two blocks, and a crucial 3-pointer from Amari McCottry with 2:17 left extended the lead to eight and effectively sealed the game.
While Thames led all scorers, Saint Louis benefited from a balanced effort. Dion Brown added 10 points, and Quentin Jones chipped in 9 points and three assists. For VCU, Lazar Djokovic provided an interior presence with 11 points, two blocks, and a game-high 31 minutes, but the Rams’ backcourt struggled from the field.
Statistically, the game was a defensive grind. Both teams committed double-digit turnovers and recorded more steals than assists. The difference came at the free-throw line, where VCU’s 20-of-24 performance kept them in contention, and from the field, where Saint Louis’s 42.9% shooting markedly outperformed VCU’s 28.6%.
The win continues a strong start to the season for Saint Louis, whose only loss came by a single point to Stanford in late November. VCU, which entered the game as a slight pregame favorite, saw a three-game winning streak snapped.
Saint Louis travels to face La Salle on Saturday. VCU will look to rebound on the road at George Mason, also on Saturday.

The most important part of the game, as detailed in the play-by-play, was unquestionably the first half defensive performance by Saint Louis. By holding VCU to 22 points on 23.3% shooting, forcing 8 turnovers, and blocking 3 shots, the Billikens built an 8-point halftime lead that provided a crucial cushion. This early dominance set the tone, forced VCU into a chasing posture for the entire second half, and ultimately proved the foundation for the road victory, as the Rams’ improved second-half offense could only close the gap, not overcome it.
