Georgia Southern at Old Dominion
NORFOLK, Va. (Interstat) — A surging Georgia Southern looks to continue its winning ways against a struggling Old Dominion squad when the Sun Belt Conference men’s basketball rivals meet Saturday at the Constant Convocation Center.
The Eagles (11-5) enter on a seven-game win streak, their latest a dramatic 82-81 overtime road victory at Coastal Carolina on Thursday. Guard Tyren Moore starred in that win, scoring 21 points and grabbing nine rebounds. Moore has been a consistent offensive force, averaging over 16 points per game during the streak and erupting for 21 points in just 15 minutes in a blowout win over Coastal Georgia on Dec. 11.
Georgia Southern’s offense has been potent, scoring 90 or more points in four of its last six contests. Tavarus Webb (22 points) and Alden Applewhite (14 points, 11 rebounds) provided key support alongside Moore in the overtime triumph.
Old Dominion (4-11) seeks to halt a two-game skid and find consistency in conference play. The Monarchs fell 81-73 at home to Appalachian State on New Year’s Eve despite a 20-point, six-rebound effort from guard Jordan Battle. Battle has been a bright spot, averaging 17.5 points over his last four games, including a 23-point performance in a narrow loss to Coastal Carolina on Dec. 20.
The Monarchs have faced a tough schedule but have struggled defensively, allowing 80 or more points in seven games this season. Containing Georgia Southern’s high-scoring attack will be a primary challenge.
This matchup is the first of two regular-season meetings. The teams will play again in Statesboro on Jan. 15. Saturday’s contest tips off a critical January stretch for both teams as Sun Belt play intensifies.
Georgia Southern next plays at South Alabama on Jan. 10. Old Dominion travels to face Coastal Carolina on Jan. 8 before a road game at James Madison on Jan. 10.
