Clemson Holds Off Pittsburgh for Road ACC Victory
PITTSBURGH (Interstat) — In a gritty, back-and-forth Atlantic Coast Conference clash defined by defense and decisive plays in the final minute, the Clemson Tigers held off the Pittsburgh Panthers 73-68 on Saturday afternoon at Petersen Events Center.
Clemson guard Jestin Porter scored a game-high 21 points, including four critical free throws in the closing seconds, to lift the Tigers to a hard-fought road victory in front of a crowd of 6,652. The win improved Clemson to 12-3 overall, while Pittsburgh fell to 7-8.
The most important sequence of the game unfolded in the final 17 seconds with Clemson clinging to a 69-66 lead. After Pittsburgh’s Brandin Cummings made one of two free throws to cut the deficit to two, Clemson inbounded the ball to Porter, who was immediately fouled. The Houston native calmly sank both free throws to push the lead back to four with 17 seconds remaining.
Pittsburgh’s ensuing possession ended in a turnover when Nojus Indrusaitis stole an errant pass from Porter, but the Panthers could not capitalize. Indrusaitis missed a desperation 3-pointer as time expired, sealing the Clemson victory. The final moments capped a game where neither team led by more than seven points.
The contest was a tale of contrasting efficiencies. Clemson, despite committing 14 turnovers and managing only five assists, won by maximizing its possessions. The Tigers shot 53.3% from the field (24 of 45) and outscored Pittsburgh 30-28 in the paint. Pittsburgh, conversely, struggled with its shooting, finishing at 44.2% (23 of 52) and connecting on just 6 of 17 from 3-point range. The Panthers did force 10 steals and won the assist battle 10-5, but it was not enough to overcome their offensive struggles.
Porter’s backcourt mate, Efrem Johnson, added 10 points for Clemson, while frontcourt players RJ Godfrey and Nick Davidson each contributed 14 points. Davidson’s efficiency was notable, scoring his 14 points in just 19 minutes of action. Carter Welling anchored the interior for the Tigers with 8 points, 10 rebounds and 2 blocks.
Pittsburgh was led by Damarco Minor’s 17 points, though he needed 36 minutes to reach that total. Omari Witherspoon provided a spark off the bench with 14 points, and Roman Siulepa posted a well-rounded line of 12 points and 7 rebounds in 38 minutes. Barry Dunning also reached double figures with 10 points.
The first half set the tone for a defensive struggle, with Pittsburgh taking a narrow 35-34 lead into halftime. The Panthers built that advantage on the final play of the period, a Damarco Minor 3-pointer assisted by Cummings with 11 seconds left. The second half featured nine lead changes and five ties as both teams traded blows. Clemson finally gained a measure of separation with a 7-0 run midway through the half, capped by a Porter 3-pointer that gave the Tigers a 50-45 lead they would not fully relinquish.
Pittsburgh stayed within striking distance until the end, thanks largely to its defense, which generated 12 points off Clemson turnovers. However, the Panthers’ own offensive execution faltered down the stretch, scoring just two field goals in the final four minutes.
Clemson, which entered the game as a 4-point favorite, outperformed its 80.4% win probability according to Interstat’s ELO system. The combined score of 141 points went over the pregame over/under line of 135.5.
The Tigers will look to build on the conference road win when they host SMU on Wednesday. Pittsburgh, seeking to right its season, continues its homestand against Syracuse next Saturday. The two teams are scheduled to meet again in Clemson on Jan. 31.
