Chattanooga at Virginia Military Institute
LEXINGTON, Va. (Interstat) — Two Southern Conference men’s basketball teams looking to reverse early-season struggles will meet Saturday when the Chattanooga Mocs visit the Virginia Military Institute Keydets at Cameron Hall.
Chattanooga (6-8) enters on a two-game skid, most recently falling 77-72 at UNC Greensboro on Thursday. The Mocs have lost four of their last five, with the lone win in that stretch a 73-66 victory at Alabama A&M on Dec. 21. Their offense has shown potency, scoring 78 or more points in four of the last six games, but defensive consistency has been an issue.
The Mocs are led by guard Jordan Frison, who has been a standout performer. Over his last seven games, Frison is averaging over 19 points and 5 assists per contest. He scored 27 points against Alabama A&M and has topped 20 points four times in that span, including a 20-point, 6-assist effort in a loss at Auburn.
VMI (5-9) is also seeking to snap a losing streak, having dropped its last two games. The Keydets fell 78-58 to Samford at home on Thursday and lost a high-scoring affair at Radford, 97-90, on Dec. 21. Their season has been marked by volatility, with wins over non-Division I opponents Christendom and Virginia-Lynchburg, but also several lopsided losses to higher-caliber competition.
The Keydets will rely on guard TJ Johnson, who has provided a steady scoring punch. Johnson is averaging over 19 points per game across his last four outings, including a 21-point performance at Radford and 22 points in limited minutes against Christendom.
Historically, the matchup has favored Chattanooga, which has dominated the series in recent years. For both squads, this game represents a critical opportunity to gain momentum as they enter the heart of the SoCon schedule next week. Chattanooga begins a three-game homestand against Furman on Jan. 7, while VMI hits the road for games at East Tennessee State and Furman.
Tipoff is set for Saturday afternoon in Lexington.
