Houston Overcomes Halftime Deficit to Edge Cincinnati in Defensive Struggle

CINCINNATI (Interstat) — In a defensive struggle emblematic of the Big 12 Conference, the Houston Cougars grinded out a 67-60 victory over the Cincinnati Bearcats on Saturday afternoon at a sold-out Fifth Third Arena.

A crowd of 11,062 witnessed a game defined by physicality and missed shots, but ultimately decided by Houston’s superior execution in the final minutes and a standout performance from guard Kingston Flemings. The win improved Houston’s record to 13-1 overall and 1-0 in the Big 12, while Cincinnati fell to 8-6 and 0-1.

The first half was a ragged affair, with both teams struggling to find offensive rhythm. Cincinnati, fueled by the home crowd, managed to build a 33-28 lead at the break. Day Day Thomas was the catalyst for the Bearcats, scoring 15 of his team-high 15 points before halftime, including a pull-up jumper just before the buzzer. Houston’s offense sputtered, relying heavily on Flemings, who kept the Cougars within striking distance with 11 first-half points.

The second half began disastrously for the visitors. Cincinnati scored the first five points, extending their lead to 10 on a Moustapha Thiam three-pointer and a Thiam layup off a Baba Miller assist, forcing a quick Houston timeout just over 90 seconds into the period.

The most important part of the game unfolded from there, as Houston’s defense ignited its offense. The Cougars embarked on a decisive 17-2 run over a seven-minute span, completely flipping the momentum. The surge was fueled by defensive stops and timely shooting. Milos Uzan connected on two critical three-pointers during the run, and Flemings began to impose his will, attacking the basket and setting up teammates. His steal and assist on a Joseph Tugler dunk capped the run, giving Houston a 45-40 lead it would not relinquish.

Cincinnati refused to fade, with Thiam and Miller working inside to keep pace. The Bearcats closed to within 55-53 on a Baba Miller turnaround jumper with just over seven minutes to play. Once again, Houston had an answer. A key sequence saw Kingston Flemings hit a deep three-pointer off an assist from Joseph Tugler, then immediately steal the ensuing inbounds pass from Day Day Thomas for a layup, pushing the lead back to seven and silencing the arena.

Down the stretch, Houston’s defense and rebounding sealed the victory. The Cougars forced three critical turnovers in the final three minutes. With the lead at five, Uzan delivered the dagger, a step-back three-pointer with 2:48 remaining to extend the advantage to eight points. Cincinnati would get no closer than five as Houston closed the game at the free-throw line.

Flemings, a sophomore from San Antonio, was the engine for Houston, finishing with a game-high 19 points to go with six assists and three steals in 37 minutes. His backcourt mate, Milos Uzan of Las Vegas, provided crucial scoring support with 18 points, including four three-pointers. The Cougars’ frontcourt contributed heavily to the gritty win, with Joseph Tugler of Monroe, Louisiana, grabbing seven rebounds and blocking two shots, and Chris Cenac Jr. of New Orleans pulling down eight rebounds.

For Cincinnati, the interior duo of Baba Miller and Moustapha Thiam combined for 24 points and 13 rebounds. Miller, from Mallorca, Spain, filled the stat sheet with 11 points, eight rebounds, and three assists. Thiam, the 7-foot-2 center from Dakar, Senegal, scored 13 points and blocked two shots. Day Day Thomas of Bishopville, South Carolina, scored all 15 of his points in the first half but was hampered by six turnovers.

Houston, which entered the game as an 8.5-point favorite according to sportsbooks, defied the total score projection. The combined 127 points fell well under the over/under line of 132.5, a testament to the defensive intensity on both sides. The victory also exceeded the pregame probability from Interstat’s ELO system, which gave Houston a 93.5% chance to win.

The Cougars continue their early Big 12 schedule at home against Texas Tech on Tuesday. Cincinnati hits the road for its next conference test, traveling to face West Virginia, also on Tuesday. The two teams are scheduled to meet again in Houston on Jan. 31.
